When Accepting Guest Posts Might Start Hurting Your Personal Blog

By Nile Flores 10 Comments

Guest posts are great. You get fresh content and the guest writer gets a backlink. That is merely the tip of what guest blogging is all about. However, there is a point when guest posts might start hurting your blog.

If you are running a site and it is normally just you, and your followers have come to recognize your site to be branded as you, it might get a bit confusing if the percentage of guest posts become so high, your voice is no longer heard.

For example, I branded Blondish.net to be known as the site of Nile Flores. Of course, I occasionally have guest posts, but after the 500 posts I have done alone, not even 2 dozen posts (not included in the number of posts I have written) have been published. I am very picky on who is allowed to post because I want my site to encompass what I think is important in helping others with their websites.

It is important that if you intend on having a site that you have branded personally, to make sure your voice is the one that your readers have no doubt who the website belongs to. If you are publishing just to get content all the time, perhaps you need to think about your site’s focus and see about blogging on those topics, rather than relying on outsiders to fuel your blog. A lot of sites that allow very frequent guest posts on personal blogs are ones I noticed that the original site owner’s voice have been diluted drastically.

Although it is important to publish new posts and keep some sort of flow, it is important that the site owner takes the reigns and writes the larger percentage on their own personal site, rather than leaving it to others to chug out content.

If you are finding that you are having a lot of willing writers, perhaps creating a community blog might be helpful? However, remember… your own personal blog should ooze you more than anyone else.

If you are accepting guest writers, is the percentage of your blog posts far greater than the guest posts you publish? Are you branding your personal blog successfully even with accepting guest posts?

It all comes down to the quality of the guest posts in comparison to your standards. If the guest posts are of high quality, you can even post more guest posts than own articles without being in danger of loosing readership.

What's even worse is outsourced blog posts, with little to no screening done by the blog owner. It makes the blog less personal, and posts may not always be reflective of brand personality.

Isn't it a dream of every blogger, to administer the blog and get as many quest writers to write original content for you you? If your blog is popular enough to get other writers to be interested in spending their time writing articles for your blog, I think you are already a success and should not worry about your voice not to be heard.

That's the very thing – the reputation of the blog or the site – why I still refuse guest posting, i.e. I know that when I start guest blogging I'll get more backlinks to my blog but at the same time my posts should be informative, relevant and of the same quality as the other posts there. So I'm preparing for guest posting but not yet.

That is the point guy. Hurting our own blog just because of the guest post is i think not good thing. As you said guest posting is effective but such a effectiveness is not worth which hurt your own blog. Really guy you open my eye. For a few moments i just thing about guest blogging and didn’t think about my own blog but you really great guy and believe this is important for all blog owners. Thanks for giving such great post.

Hey currently my blog has PR 3 and I am having around 8 dozen guest post requests of which I have accepted and published around 70+ guests posts with 2 external do follow backlinks each. I am wondering does it going to hurt my SEO efforts. Will it make difficult for me to PR 4 ??

How often are you publishing these guest posts… as they are submitted and approved? You really have to give more articles of a certain type to earn more on that Page Rank. Is your site really a personal blog, or are you writing and publishing guest posts every so often. I would not worry about the SEO aspect… rather your branding. I have only approved 25 guest posts in the 657 posts I have written to make sure that people know its my site and rather than using others as a clutch to publish info, I build my authority by keeping my brand as pure as possible.

As for your posts, it all also depends on how long your site has existed as well, what topics you cover… and how unique those articles are as compared to your blog competition. Also, because search engines are more socially integrated… how much people share your articles and how much engagement are very important.

We have many email request for posting a guest post but we have published only 90 posts in my blog and I think minimum 200 articles should be published before starting guest posting onto blog. What would you say?
