WordPress 3.6.1 is available for download. WordPress 3.6.1 is a maintenance and security update, so its important to upgrade as soon as possible.
Some of these security fixes are toward closing a glaring hole in the author role, block from potential remote code execution, and much more.
If your web host doesn’t allow you to use the automatic upgrade, you can install the upgraded WordPress manually.
If you are familiar with FTP, or your web host Filemanager, just replace (overwrite) all your WordPress files EXCEPT:
- wp-config.php
- the entire wp-contents folder don’t even touch it
Before you upgrade, ALWAYS back up your website!
If you’re not comfortable with backing up your own site, you can definitely hire me to upgrade and back up your WordPress site for you. If you want to do it for yourself, WordPress has an upgrade guide, which pretty much says the same thing I said earlier in this post.
There is no excuse not to upgrade. Leaving your site with an older version is like a crap shoot… you are risking your website’s data and possibly the privilege of having a web hosting account. You are required by your web host to keep all scripts up to date.
Have you upgraded your WordPress site?

Hi Nile…..
just one question…… can we update wordpress version directly from admin dashboard? will it affect my old articles or theme?
Adam Kielich says
Snagged the update last night. Seems like my website is running a little faster and smoother after the update. Maybe just be a server issue though.

Hi Nile
I just noticed the new release and have just started making a backup of my files and database. My blog has been under a lot of hacker attacks lately so I don’t want them to find any security holes on my blog..!
Nile says
You might want to try installing WordFence if you haven’t already done so.

I usually wait a few days, if I don’t hear anything negative about the new release then I upgrade.

I use BackupBuddy to create backups of my website and then I perform the WP upgrade. Has worked flawlessly so far!
Nile says
Backup Buddy is great. I just use my cPanel full backup instead as that works for me. I’m not too fond of installing a plugin that opens my entire site up, including the database, when in use.

Hello Nile,
In the previous WordPress version there is some bug. In the latest version I heard it is fixed. I already updated to latest version. Now it seems more secured & smoothness in the site.

I just upgraded to 3.6.1 recently after waiting for a while. I don’t usually upgrade rightaway. How do you do a backup using the cpanel? I was thinking of BackupBuddy but after reading your comment above, I’d like to see if I can just backup the entire site using the cpanel instead of another plugin which I’m trying to keep as minimum as posssible.

Figured it would be a good time to remind all my clients that if they haven’t upgraded that now’s the time! Most security problems with sites come because the person didn’t upgrade – I think this is something you can’t tell people enough. Someone said that just about the time you’re sick of mentioning something that the other party is just then beginning to get the message. 🙂
