When Is The Best Time To Do A Twitter Cleanup?

By Nile Flores 23 Comments

twitter-cleanup-thumbnailTwitter cleanup is when you go through your account and skim your followers. You eliminate the ones that are noticeably spam. For those with accounts in the tens or hundreds of thousands, this might be difficult. This could be tedious because Twitter does not like mass unfollow and follow applications.

So, for those with a lot of followers, when is it best? How often should it be done?

The best answer is once a month. Designate 15 minutes to do this as it should not be a chore and really, you can eliminate a lot even in 15 minutes. To do this, skim the profiles for ones not completed or ones that may have spam for their most recent tweet. You can also try applications like Tweepi, SocialOomph, or FriendorFollow to skim through your followers to see who is active and more. Please do take in account that there are twitter monetizing programs like Sponsored Tweets that the users only tweets on occasion, so you really have to decide what qualifies as active or worthwhile seeing in your Twitter stream.

For some people, they are lax in who they allow, but for those focusing on certain niches, it might be best to take a deeper look into some followers to find out if they have anything to say. This might also be an opportunity to connect with people who actually are interesting! It also might be a good time to put together a couple focused Twitter lists.

Remember that sometimes your own followers do look through your follower list. If it is jam packed with spammers, they may even unfollow. They are looking through your followers to find any interesting individuals, which draw in your social networking community a lot closer.

How often do you do a twitter clean up? What are your guidelines? Do you use any specific tools to clean your twitter follow list up?

    Thanks for the reminder Nile!

Just checked and I have 401 that are not following me back! Honestly, I don’t keep up with Twitter as much as I should…yes that should word!

But as I clicked around before I replied to this post it looks like those 15 minutes every so often is time well spend in order to flush out those who I don’t want on my Twitter.

    Many thanks!

Hi Nile! Thanks for the timely reminder. I don’t do this as often as is necessary. I have used iunfollow in the past. Are you familiar with them?

    Hi Nile,

I use Tweepi to clean up my twitter profile, However I’m not regular for this task. Sometimes I do it monthly, sometimes litter earlier and sometimes even after 2 months. But really these tools are awesome and reduce your time and efforts.

Hi Max! When you sign up, it will list your followers and you will have an option to unfollow them. Just play around with the site and see how it goes for you.

For me twitter cleanups come when i’m in the procrastinating stage. I plan to write a post, I post pone it, and then start doing random things, occasionally landing on twitter, and doing all the stuff. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I generally use Hootsuite for social management, haven’t tried any of the ones you mentioned but based on most of the comments I’m not sure if I want to lol.

Hootsuite doesn’t have a way to list and mass unfollow people, or mass unfollow to what Twitter deems within their TOS. However, I do like using Hootsuite to monitor my social streams and some hashtag trends relevant to my niche.

Thank you for an article on Twitter cleanup. I remove inactive followers once in a while and I make use of amazing features of Tweepi. It’s the best tool to manage inactive users. I’ve not tried SocialOomph and FriendorFollow

    Hi Nile,
I decided long ago that I never wanted to follow more than 1,000 Twitter accounts. Whenever I see my follower count approaching that number I use JustUnfollow to remove the inactive accounts or those who haven’t followed me back.

I use use HootSuite to monitor my Twitter streams for the lists that I created that way I rarely see some of the junk that might otherwise end up in my full Twitter stream.

I started using an app on my droid called Just Unfollow. It’s helped a lot keeping up with who to follow, who to unfollow, those that don’t use twitter for long periods. check it out.

Figuring out the best time and method to cleaning up your Twitter feed by removing followers or deleting retweets or favorites that are old and unnecessary. It is important to do so and I think using apps would be most useful and the best plan.

I used to be pretty diligent about this – but haven’t done it in a while – and boy did the list need a good spring cleaning ๐Ÿ™‚ You’re right too about getting rid of the spammers and the people who never post and or never follow you back – better a smaller group that you actually talk to

I couldn’t certainly use some of the automation tools you
    recommend here Nile.

And doing a periodic sweep of my account is definitely an activity I need to be
    more pro-active doing.

I’m sure when I do, I’ll find plenty of spammers, even though my twitter following isn’t really that large.

    Thanks!
