I’ve seen A LOT of websites die out over the years. The scenario: The owner ends up losing interest in blogging. It happens.
However, I’m sure you’re wondering why it happens, and how to get back into the swing of blogging? Hopefully by the time this post is complete, your interest may be re-kindle.
What To Do When You Lose Interest In Blogging
The big question to tackle first is – Why do people lose interest in blogging?
There are several reasons. I’ll list a few below, but there may be more reasons:
- Blogging has become a chore.
- You really never liked writing in the first place.
- You don’t think there is anything else you can write about in your niche.
- Stress or poor health or family issues
- You blogged on a topic you’re not passionate about.
So, the above are pretty common reasons why you would lose interest in blogging. The interesting thing about each of these reasons are that ALL of them have solutions. So, I’m going to cover the solution to each of these issues.
Blogging has become a chore
This can happen because you’re either blogging a lot until you’re about to burnout, you’re writing on topics you really don’t want to talk about even if they are in your niche, or you aren’t seeing a return on investment for the time spent writing your posts.
Don’t blog until you’re about to burnout. You don’t have to blog every day. Now, it’s ideal to blog that much if you have the time, and if you prefer to fulfill some SEO guy’s dream.
Stop writing on topics that you have no interest in writing. If you do, your regular readers will be able to tell. They are usually pitiful and lack your blog voice in it.
ROI is the name of the game, but if you’re not getting comments or subscribers, then maybe you’re missing some things in social media marketing that could help. Yes, your content is important, but you need to make sure you’re sharing your articles, as well as motivating your readers to engage with you.
You really never liked writing in the first place
Well, this one is easy… stop writing. Hire someone to write for you, especially if you’re a business. Hire someone who loves to write.
The other solution is to try other mediums like images, video, and audio. If you’re better at speaking, then put together a podcast. You will write minimally with these other mediums, but you may find blogging like this a better fit for you.
You don’t think there is anything else you can write about in your niche
There are always more things to write in your niche. Go back into your blog and think about your niche. Think of some of the most general types of posts in your niche that can be spinned many times. Trust me, there will be.
However, if you don’t know, I’ve solved your issue with my Ultimate List of Blog Ideas series.
Stress or poor health or family issues
Things happen. You may have a lot of things happening. Don’t add the stress about blogging. You can either set some time aside to schedule posts out for the week, or reduce the times you blog.
You can even bring in an occasional guest writer. Blog when you want. It doesn’t have to rule your life to the point that you’re frazzled.
You blogged on a topic you’re not passionate about
Honestly, if you can’t stand behind what you write and can’t get into learning more about your niche, then you need to find a different topic to focus around.
You are most likely going to write about things in your niche that you will need to learn, or like in a technology based niche, your niche is always evolving. You will need to keep on top of that information. It will take work, so if you’re not passionate enough about your topic, then choose a topic that you would actually put some work into it.
Are you on the verge of blogger burnout? How can I help inspire you to blog again?

The 2 most reasons why bloggers lose Interest In Blogging are to blog on a topic theyโre not passionate about and to not monetize his blog by the way i can’t lose interest in blogging because i’m passionate in.
Adam says
The longer you write a blog the easier it is to feel like you’ve said everything there is to say on the topic but it’s usually the case that you’ve just written on all the blatant subject matter. When I get that feeling I like to step back and look through my old posts. Often I see topics where I have shifted opinions or neglected to delve into the important nuances. It’s not the easy subject matter that pops into my head while I’m driving to work but it’s valuable subject matter that builds around the existing material.

Hi Nile
I have actually been struggling a bit finding motivation for my blog the last couple of months. I guess there is multiple things that have made me feel that way. I have not had the time that I needed to write good quality posts and doing the research I need to do. I has also been struggling to come up with good topics for new posts. I guess it is happening for all bloggers from time to time. I have had my blog for almost 5 years now and I am sure that I will find my lost motivation again at some point. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this matter Nile ๐

My old blog died because I wasn’t being specific enough with what I wanted to offer. I struggled with finding out what I really wanted to do, and I think in the blogging world, you really have to know yourself to focus and stick to it. Luckily, I like to write and find expression with blogging/writing. ๐
ImNabeel says
My problem is availability of time, somewhat your second-last point. I work full time and my job is very demanding. I struggle to take out time for my blog which is why I have not yet got desired results.
I am trying to keep myself motivated though and am figuring out new ways to utilize whatever time i have in the best possible manner.
Good day.

Excellent advise Niles!
Although, unfortunately I think far too many newbie marketers, jump into
a particular, in search of earning money first!
And after a really brief time, once the initial dust settles and they begin to realize the serious commitment & challenges being in business in general & effective blogging entails!
The allure of it quickly fades & away and they get the itch to find some other supposed
“magic bullet” online marketing solution!LOL!
Just the five subjects you mentioned, provided they have at least some combination
of keyword traffic value, would certainly be worth blogging about!LOL!
Anyway, thanks for providing some extremely viable solutions & for offering some worthwhile,
evergreen subject matter to blog about!

I lose interest when the blogger gets more judgemental and tells everyone how wrong they are and become argumentative with the readers.I stopped reading a ladyโs blog because of thatโฆShe has very strong views and doesnโt seem to understand that not all christians share her views. She deleted her Facebook account..but Iโve found wonderful christian bloggers whoโve helped me in my faith instead of put me down.
Manouk says
I’ve really been struggling with the question if I would actually even start with blogging. I love writing, but whats the fun when nobody read it, right?
Mark makes an excellent comment: a lot of marketeers are in it just for the moneymaking. I think if that’s the reason of starting a blog you shouldn’t start at all because you can never keep interest if you don’t really love to do it.
Thank you for sharing this information with us!

Like anything else blogging first starts with having the right mindset. You have to build a success mindset and the rest will follow. Blogging is best when you recognize that your writing is helping others. It becomes the fuel to keep it up and make it better.

I think everyone goes through cycles when they are excited to blog and feel like writing all the time, and then suddenly need to take a break, for any of the reasons you listed above. If after the break you still do not feel like writing again, then perhaps that is a sign that you are not meant to work on a blog, but if you come back refreshed and full of energy and ideas, then you know that you just needed some time to refocus.

I think many get overwhelmed by it since the hours can be more demanding than a 9-5 job, which I do from time to time. That is why it’s always important to step back and take a mini break every now and then.

As a Life/Career Coach I know ‘burnout’ spans all industries not just blogging. When it happens there is a ‘need’ of some sort not being met – sometimes it’s as simple as time OFF – taking a vacation alleviates that. Sometimes it is feeling ‘unappreciated’ – this goes beyond whether or not the ‘monetization’ is in place, you can have a fully monetized blog and experience feeling un-appreciated for your efforts. Appreciation is not solely about compensation…..

I am currently going through this phase. And I think I have found the problem that you have mentioned. I do get time to blog at the end of the day when I am about to burnout. Now onwards I will avoid this time and blog only when my mind fresh. Good analysis.

Hello Niles
Great post ! All the reasons you gave were very true and valid. I think most of the time newbies think they are going to make a lot of money but then they find out blogging is really a lot of work. Or like you said they are blogging in a field they aren’t passionate about. When I get burned out I will just have me a nice super weekend and take a mini-break from blogging. Thanks this was really a great post to really make me do some thinking.
Marie says
This article made me chuckle…I think most bloggers get fatigued sometimes. I guess as you suggest the key is to remember why you’re doing it. I think personal blogs mean that sometimes people out grow their site but with business blogs if you are getting bored then probably so is your customer! Then it’s time to rethink and refresh what you’re doing and start solving your customers problems again….they certainly keep finding new ones to come up with to keep us on our toes ๐

Greetings Nile Flores
What i do is basically i note down everything when i learn anything or when i start any new blog and gradually the notes grow and also the methods and the planning gets written so that when i got frustrated with blogging then i go back and see the notes to get some motivation and suddenly i figure out those things that i have forgotten and
that gives me spirit to try that and in this way i manage to get started again.
By the way this post is amazing lot of people are sharing their experience and it is very good.
Thanks Nile Flores for this amazing post.
