How To Handle Twitter Drama

By Nile Flores 34 Comments

Millions of people use Twitter. In fact, from anyone who has noticed, 2009 was the year that Twitter literally exploded and finally became more mainstream. Since then, many businesses and celebrities use the service in many ways.

Some celebrities share information of articles about them or where they are going to be if they are in the mood to welcome the public, or for pure publicity. Back in 2010, Trent Reznor of the band Nine Inch Nails decided that Twitter was no longer for him (by the way, the link to his old Twitter account is to a Twitter ‘Page not found.’ He had quite the followership and was quite active in his tweet stream. He got down with the masses of fans and haters alike to tweet. It was the haters who ended up the winner.

dontfeedthetwittertrollsHowever, he has not been the only one to feel the glares and flamage. Businesses, celebrities, and even normal people on a daily basis on Twitter are getting the same treatment. It all boils down to how you handle the situation. If you have gotten into a situation where people are harassing you on Twitter, or any other social network.

1. Report to the service (Twitter or whatever other social network you use) if the accusations are threatening or defamation of character.
2. Just ignore it. Flamers get tired when you do not fuel the fire.
3. Block users you feel you do not want to hear from if they are persistent.

Not everyone will ever agree with what you say, so you may catch a few kerfluffles, but it is best to be laid back about the situation.

In fact, there is a saying to not “feed the trolls” as when you are in a position of influence, no matter what it is, there are people that take joy in causing problems just for the fun of it. The results could be a loss of followers, or your reputation will be slandered.

Have you had any drama on Twitter? How have you handled it? What celebrities have you seen that have had problems with Twitter drama? What other suggestions do you have to handle Twitter drama?

    Hi Nile,
Great advice! We can’t let the trolls win. As you said, the haters will end up the winners. One of the hardest thing I ever learned in business, is to not take everything personally. That’s a tough lesson and something that I sometimes still struggle with but I find that if I can look at a situation objectively, it helps. It’s great advice to not feed the trolls.

This is definitely some good advice. How would you recommend dealing with negativity as a brand?

It really depends on the issue. If it is an issue that stems from slander, a good PR statement should be issued and people can either accept it or not. Other issues would be to ignore, especially if the person trying to cause problems is just doing it for fun.

    Hi Nile,
Really interesting topic. Twitter drama! I’ve never realize it. I think it can happen every time to everyone. So don’t take it personal is the best bet. When we have the drama, and we don’t like it, then just block it.

It depends on the drama. If it is something that is false, it is best to make sure at least the information in question has proof so the problem is solved. However, there are a lot of people that are doing things that are not consistent with their brand, or not acting appropriately on their social network accounts under a professional brand that try to deny their mistake. They should just either ignore it or issue a civil PR statement.

Completely accept and appreciate all the advices . i think if anyone abuses you on twitter .. One should not criticize a great tool like twitter . I think twitter allows an user to allow to accept or decline follow-up requests .. so this should be enabled by users who want limited or handful followers .

It is a good thing that Twitter allows you to block others… for celebrities, I am sure when something comes up, for them it is annoying to block the trouble makers in mass amounts…lol

That is the sad part of having a twitter account. Anyone can bash and put you down. It will spread like wild fire in just retweet. Its a good instrument for publicity to celebrities but its also the best way to bash them.

The bashing can be done anywhere. I had some guy get ticked off just because I was busy and copied a chat I had with him to his timeline, but before he submitted the status update, he added extra lines and changed some of what I originally said just to make me look like I was racist to people from India. I set it straight and even though there were people who didn’t bother to get their facts straight… the guy had his message removed by Facebook while the message I posted in regards to the real truth of the situation is still up.

Twitter drama can get out of control with tweeting and retweeting and favoriting. It is all passive aggressive and never-ending. I think businesses need to restrict themselves the most and work on neutralizing issues before they become apparent all over the Twitterverse. Ignore the trolls!

    Hi Nile,
    thanks for the great suggestions.
“Not feeding the ‘trolls” makes a lot of sense to me.
Personally, I would ignore any tweets that seem to want to ‘get a reaction’.
You are so right ‘not everyone will agree with you’ or like what you are saying.
I have a friend who didn’t want quotes on her Twitter feed . . . , well it takes all sorts.
    Cheers,
    Yorinda

I’ve been missing this. This is just the information that I needed. Great post, very interesting, thank-you for sharing! I will check back soon for more interesting article posts! I hardly ever comment on blogs that do have comments. The main reason is, you spend the time to read an article, then comments only to find that they do not accept comments anymore. You have touched some good factors here.

You have a choice to be on twitter or not and you also have a choice as to what you post. The world would be a boring place if everyone had the same views and opinions and the fact that some people choose to express their views in a rude and insulting manner is unfortunate. It comes back to then choosing to ignore these people or choosing not to be on twitter.

Hi Nile, the only drama I have had on Twitter was when they closed my account 4 times! To this day I am not sure why, but they did reinstate it each time, as I was not guilty of any of their accusations. Funny how they can shut down my little account and then I see so many unruly and even porno sites that still go on. Yikes!
    Take care,
    Lynn

Nicely done. Some people use Twitter to share their drama in life and hide themselves in alias.
But we should know our limitation to use that we don’t hurt other people.

For me the problem is that I’m not getting the right group to interact, it seems in my twitter account all are dead and only few are tweeting 100 times a day.

    Very annoying 🙁

Fantastic advice! We all can’t let the trolls win. Since you claimed, the actual haters can become the actual winners. Among the toughest matter I ever before learned running a business, is to not get anything individually. That’s a difficult lesson the other i sometimes however have trouible with yet I find that plainly can easily take a look at a position objectively, it can help. It’s fantastic advice never to supply the actual trolls.

    Nice post Nile.

Yea, there will always be haters and trolls. And no matter what
they’re constantly looking for something and or somebody
to project their crap on to.

Our job is simply not to feed into it. It’s too bad some people have nothing better to do!

    Thanks Niles!
