May 27, 2015 signifies 12 years that WordPress has been around! Wow! Don’t believe me? Well, here’s when WordPress was first available back in 2003.
WordPress has had an amazing journey. It’s grown from a blog platform, to a full-fledged content management system. It’s got a very active community and has conferences dedicated to educating WordPressers around the world.
As of today, WordPress is on version 4.2.2. There’s thousands of free WordPress themes and plugins out on WordPress.org to give you the opportunity to have a really decent website. I’ve been privileged to meet a lot of people in the community.
In 2014, I was honored to become a part of Team Yoast, as part of their support team, and also started helping validate and translate their plugins in 2 dialects of Spanish (es_ES and es_MX.)
Since the beginning of 2015, I’ve started to up my participation in contributing more towards WordPress. I’ve started getting more involved in various places at Make.WordPress.org. Those places I’ve started to get involved in more are: Forums, WordPress.tv, and Polyglots. I’ve also been actively speaking more at WordCamps and delving into topics I’ve never talked about in the past.
Also, my community on Facebook, All About WordPress is now over 7,000 members. We’re pretty focused on helping and adding value to the WordPress community. I’m proud of how far it’s come, considering we’re pretty strict about self-linking and not allowing people to sell or spam the group.
I’m amazed by all the new faces and even the old faces in the WordPress community. I’ve been astounded at even meeting some of the next generation of WordPress developers and bloggers. The community is diverse, friendly, and quite helpful. That being said…
WordPress is really what you want to make of it. It’s shaped by you. Without your feedback, we can’t grow as a CMS and as a community. I encourage you to consider giving back to the community.

I built my first website back in 2001 with Microsoft Frontpage. WordPress is SO much more powerful and makes web design easy for just about everyone. It’s been a game changer for sure. It will be interesting to see where the platform goes in the next 12 years.
