The biggest mistake a business owner can make it believing in getting rich quick. It doesn’t last for long, so its not enough to sustain. The best thing is to think about building a business and mapping it out enough to include room for error, because mistakes and failure will happen along the way.
The journey will be long and bumpy, but it will also have some highlights. If you stay on top of your business and are open-minded enough to try a few new things here and there, you can’t really go wrong, even if some of those things don’t work. It all builds your experience to building a sturdy foundation for your business.
Same can be said for bloggers. You can create a website and make all of these posts, but you won’t become an overnight success. You have to work to connect with others, ask for shout outs and trade favors to promote your colleagues, and sometimes even invest in advertising too.
If you’ve been in business or a blogger for a few months, to maybe even a year, have patience. However, don’t sit back and think it will come eventually. You still have to work hard so you can play hard in the future.

Hi Nile,
I love this quote from Eddie Cantor that says, “It takes 20 years to make an overnight success.”
Same is true for bloggers as well because blogging needs to follow the principles of success if it is a profession, if its a business. And those who take blogging as a career, they definitely need to remember this rule.
Thank you for sharing!

Kumar

Hi Nile!
Don’t I know it! The problem is, many new people coming in are plagued with the get rich quick scam. No business either off line or on line will get you rich quick!
It’s a shame that new bloggers coming in are being told “all you have to do is blog and you will have a business” Phewey! There are many facets to blogging for a business. The list is long, the learning curve is never ending. But to me it is all worth it.
Thanks for the shout out on this one.

It is definitely a long and hard road. The whole “content is king” mantra has been beat so much that it often turns into a Field of Dreams assertion: if you build it, they will come. No, they won’t. Somebody might get lost on the internet and end up on your blog and eventually you might get a constant reader/subscriber or get some social media activity but that’s pretty much it. Okay, maybe in many years you will have a small, stable following. You have to work at the marketing side to get people to come see your imperial content.

Hi Nile
Patience has been the key for me.
I started my business knowing full well it wouldn’t provide a full time wage for a while – but I stuck at it, worked on my SEO and social media marketing and now, almost 2 years on, business is booming.

Several people do the same mistake and think that they can become rich overnight but I would like to say that at least 5 years should be given your online business to grow. At least that’s what I do.

Nile, this is totally true statement. Success is hard work repeated over and over again every single day. Simple as that. It is a long grind, but definitely worth it IMHO.

Hi Nile,
I understand the principle. Build a strong foundation, become a real professional, build a reputation, learn how to create relationships and you will succeed. This takes time.
I am now more aware and more comfortable with this mindset that, by the way, belongs mostly to the Western culture. It is a result of centuries of evolution of a society.
For example there is that concept of family fortune. A person (let’s say my grand, grand, grand father) starts to do business in a particular field. He works hard for decades but without becoming rich. Then, just before departure, he passes his business to his son.
His son takes it and starts to work hard to grow the business further. The he passes it to his son (daughter) and so on. In time the business grows and decades (sometimes centuries later) you have a multi-billion dollars business.
Now, if we add a stable environment, with solid laws and a stable political system, we arrive to the concept of organic grow where hard work, quality, stability and time are the most important things.
For a westerner this mindset is somehow natural. You grow in a society where you are educated this way.
The problem appears when this society opens itself world wide allowing strangers to come and starts to build relationships with them. At this moment things change dramatically.
If you explain this mindset to an Indian blogger or a Chinese, Russian, African one, they won’t understand. Some of them will have a heart attack instantly. Others will immediately transform themselves into haters then become spammers and hackers and here we are: a world full of spam, DDOS attacks etc.
The difference in mindset is so huge that it generates conflicts. Education is the only key. Western bloggers should invest more time in educating their Asian, African, East European bloggers about the real mindset of a business. It is very important for both sides.
Things like: “If you use my formula, you can make money in 30 days” or “I made my first dollar in 6 months and two of my students did the same” must disappear. It only generates misunderstanding disappointment and hate.
Have a wonderful day

Nile,
I think most of us were originally led to believe that all we have to do is follow some simple formula and the money will come pouring in – and keep coming. The truth, however, is that building an online business is not that different from a brick and mortar business. There are strategies requires, business plans, financial investment, people connections and time.
I like your reminder that we need to “be prepared for a long journey.”
Warmly,
Dr. Erica

I remember there was a saying when the Web was first taking off. People would say “build it and they will come”! That’s funny – can you imagine a shop packed full of goodies that everyone would love – but it’s out in the middle of nowhere and no-one can find it?
That shop can easily be your website or your blog, it can be full of goodies, but it’s in the middle of nowhere and people don’t often come across it magically. You can’t just build it and expect people to come, you have to build it and then let people know it’s there!
Thanks for reminding people Nile!

Good reminder Nile! I don’t expect things to be quick but I wouldn’t mind if they happened faster! LOL
I love the quote Kumar shared. It really says it all.

Nile, Love it! I have noticed I get so much more traction on my blog when engaging with social media, and even more so when I can relate this to a real life event or meeting. The deeper your connection with people the better 🙂

Well said Niles. I’m not sure which annoys me more, those who run around looking for short cuts and easy solutions or those who pass themselves off as experts an promise the easy solutions and quick fixes. Whether you’re building a business or a life, it’s all about making the most of the journey.

No doubts, one should create a room for errors, and work with patience to get success. I daily see many people around me who get inspired by others earning details, and want to do something that can become the rich over the night. They quickly start investing, and then get hurt from non-acceptable results.
