Dear Bloggers and News sites:
You know who you are. It’s okay to want to make money blogging, but there’s a line where you show where you either care about who is reading your content, or don’t give a sh*t about them.
When you’ve added advertisements and popups to your site, did you even check from an Incognito browser window on how your site performs? Maybe you did, shrugged, and said, “Oh well.” Maybe you didn’t, and that’s actually even scarier.
Some sites out there, that this addresses, are the ones that have a couple popups (both ad and sign up forms), slidedown optins, slide in video or optin, ads throughout the content every other paragraph. These same sites even have ads in the sidebar, or below the posts. Even worse, with everything already said in this paragraph, some of these sites even have delayed popups as you scroll the page, location and SMS popups, and then, exit intent optins.
This is happening on both mobile and laptop. That’s really insane!
As a user, I have to spend the time on these sites that I gotta exit out of pop ups, and check “no thanks”, and click out of other things, before I get to the content.
I’m all for getting subscribers and making money from ads, but there’s gotta be a limit because even I give up on waiting for the long content from loading as the ads appear there too. In mobile, some of these ads and optins limits how much content I can see in that small device, and then with the site’s cache combined with ad networks, some of them make it difficult to click out of video ads and other things that popup.
I know I’m not the only user only that has this frustration, but I will stand on a soapbox and address this problem. It’s like a swift punch in the face when everything comes at you on the screen, interrupting your path to trying to view the site’s content. As much as I want to support bloggers that deliver great content, I refuse to suffer through the torture of making extra effort just to read your articles. Do better!
Kind Regards,
Nile
