I always have people that want a blog added to their site find it shocking that they can have their entire static site on WordPress. The problem is that a lot of people who say they want to use WordPress and are new users, are intimidated by being able to maintain their site. Sometimes the WordPress backend looks intimidating.
Personally: It is a lot less intimidating than the backend of a Joomla installation.
While I know people reading this post who have been using WordPress for quite some time might say “Well, I knew WordPress can do that”, believe me, first time users who barely have a grasp on the maintaining of their static html websites have to go through the process of learning how to use a system.
When maintaining their site, they fear messing up the layout because when they maintained their static site, they probably make quite a few oopsies. Others may not have much coding skills and their friend or local web designer had limited enough knowledge to create a simple website, but none to turn it into a WordPress template.
All websites can be converted to WordPress. It does not matter if it was on another content management system, static HTML, or even flash. I regularly convert websites from HTML to WordPress or even PSD (layered images in Photoshop) to WordPress. There are so many solutions you can apply to a website.
I have even found, and please do not deny it, after converting, ranking higher in SEO with WordPress is possible. Using proper coding and WordPress out of the box has done well for all of my own clients. The plugins used for it were just bonus to help the site even more. (Example: Google XML Sitemaps to make a Sitemaps.org Valid Sitemap, Google Analytics for WordPress to help monitor the site, Sociable and/or Digg Digg to help promote pages and posts, Gravity Forms or Contact Form plugins to add a great leads form, and much more!)
So, if you have a static website and need the dynamic of having control over your website, a system that can help make updating your site easier, and give you a leg up on your site being crawled better by the search engines, it might be high time to consider making the transition.
Do you still have a static site or any part of your site as a static HTML page? Do you have questions about WordPress that have hindered you from making the conversion?

Yes the converting is a tedious job but well worth it in the long run. Just don’t stall the sooner you do it the better off you are. Great article.

WordPress is amazing. I definately think it is the best way to go for all websites, not just blogs. All of the plugins can do so much to help make things easier when running a website. Unless you are a genius programmer, check out WordPress.

You are so right. I’ve just converted a static to a wordpress site, and really, even including the hours spent fiddling and learning how to use it, so much better. So. Much. Better. And i didn’t know about the ranking benefits. Thanks for the tip!
