This mini episode touches base on the automatic background updates integrated in WordPress 3.7. This has produced some polarity in the community. I am not for this feature, but I’ve made a suggestion to making this option easier to digest, especially to those who are more for web accessibility and giving the user their decision on what they wish.
What are your thoughts about automatic background updates? Are you going to allow it on your site or have you implemented the code given out to prevent automatic updates so you can do them when you want? Listn in and let me know your thoughts.

Hi Nile, I agree with you on more control for the web masters rather than just forcing the automatic updates. There can be issues with the plugin, their updates might be ok but some plugin may start behaving differently.
I still have to check what kind of measures has been put into the system but there can be loophole…

I understand why you have concerns over background updates, Nile, but as one who manages multiple sites I find background updates a blessing. I cannot remember ever having experienced a bad WordPress update in the past, but I have had sites hacked when I failed to update WordPress in a timely manner.
For me, having one less concern about updating is a time saver, and time is the one commodity I can never have too much of!
Thanks for thoughtful podcast. When I first saw the title, I thought it meant that WordPress was updating out site backgrounds – now that would really alarm me!

The biggest issue is when you aren’t at the computer. Timely updates…. normally I update within a day to three max, especially on major WordPress upgrades. I’m not a fan of this and there are plugins that you can manage the upgrade to multiple sites all at once.

Hi Nile,
I like your post, it is really very informative and yeah it is true that most sites are now able to automatically apply updates in the background. Thanks for this podcast btw.
Thanks again for the sharing,
Ailia

Hi Niles, interesting question…in general I would have to say that I don’t like automatic updates. I do not use them on my own sites, however, on some client sites where the user may not be diligent about updates and I am certain that there are no plugin or theme conflicts, I will use it. I still go check up on the client site, but the automatic update relieves me of the too frequent obligation to update. I also like Wordfence alerts that will send an email when there is a needed update.

Hi Nile!
I would have to agree with Alan. I manage over two dozen WordPress sites and updating each one can be extremely time consuming. I appreciate this new feature, but certainly understand where the concern is coming from.
It’s definitely an ease of use issue for me, but for those needing more control, your suggestion is perfect!
Nile says
Hi Rebekah! If you have multiple sites, there is a plugin (actually a few) to manage all updates in one backend.
