From time to time, especially in the WordPress community, there is a flair up on what is and what is not good support from a developer. This time it involved ManageWP calling out Joost de Valk, a very reputable developer and longtime member of the WordPress community over his plugin, WordPress SEO.
As a user not familiar with development, we tend to believe that whomever creates a free theme or a free plugin, that they are entitled to prompt and free support. In fact, many think that about WordPress, but forget that these plugins were built on a volunteer basis and that it takes time to answer support tickets as well as create patches and fixes, run a business, and have a life.
I’ve had that problem several times throughout the years because I was honest when I said I was too busy to provide free support on WordPress troubleshooting… not my own plugins or themes, but just on WordPress. That is why I created the All About WordPress community on Facebook.
It doesn’t matter who you are in the WordPress community, have patience or you might want to think about paying for support. By the way, Joost posted an article on his site called Helping us by helping others, and mentioned that he will be having premium support for his plugins.

I love your podcasts. We certainly love to use free plugins and it’s important to support the developers by responding to the “please support us” window that pop us to remind us they can use a little financial help. They need financial support to continue to provide the service. If too many people take “free” for granted, we all lose.
I appreciate you clearing the air with the Yoast plugin. I LOVE the Yoast plugin and it’s cool that you came to his defense from that scathing article.
