WordPress Video: The WordPress Comment System

By Nile Flores 31 Comments

The following is a video screencast that goes over the backend of WordPress, particularly the areas pertaining to the comments.

This is a screencast for WordPress newbies that I hope will help you become familiar with how to edit, add, reply, approve, and mark comments as spam. This also goes over the General Settings for Discussions that is related to the comment section and allows you to set how or if you want to moderate your site, as well as comment options, and more.

Thanks, Nile for reminding me to go back and look at the Discussion settings.

I was interested in how you made the video: this is something I have been meaning to teach myself, but have not gotten around to. What equipment and software did you use?

One concern I had was that the sound level was really low. Is there a way to test this before you make the video? I found that I needed to turn my speakers to full volume to hear what you were saying, but then it was OK.

    Thanks again
    Alan

Hi Alan! I am, using Screencast-o-matic.com for my recordings. I know a lot of other people like to use Camtasia… but for now, this works well for me. I may have to redo the video as it was not at my own computer and usually I have no problems with the sound level. Thank you for pointing that out to me. 🙂

Nile, At first I though this is a very basic topic and no need to watch the video, but then I accept that I learned a few new things on your video. Thanks for sharing with us..

I have really come to enjoy using wordpress, it wasn’t always that way, and sometimes I just thought there were simply too many things to learn.

But after a while and through the help of excellent tutorials like this on, I have come to prefer wordpress over any other kind of site. I have to admit there were a bunch of things I just did not understand about commenting and I sincerely appreciate learning them from your video. 🙂

    Nile,

I watched all 8 minutes. Very helpful video. Showing people how to go to Dashboard > Settings > Discussion to check and uncheck all them settings is a good thing. That’s something most people don’t pay attention to but has some very helpful settings to adjust such as threading comments, not to allow comments on old posts to prevent spam, and your theme needs to allow gravatars, etc.

I need to share this in my FB Fan Page!

    Thanks,

    Jupiter Jim

    WoW Nile,

You have done such a great job explaining this! WordPress has worked so well for me. I do get confused with plugging things in, but after three times on a learning curve, I finally get it!

    Thanks again,

A really useful video on how to get the most from the WordPress commenting system. Every now and then I find it goes nuts for a few weeks (probably a plugin conflict) and then settles back down again. I’d move to Livefyre but one of our bloggers doesn’t get on with it.

It would be great if you can show us how to delete the words “No comments yet” and let the comment info appear after the first one was written. Is it possible? Thanks.

I think what’s always astonished me is how many options are given to all aspects of controlling the WordPress blogging environment and how few users actually understand the intricacies of the Dashboard. This was a great introduction and would really be a great link to send to many clients who have just had a new WP blogging site designed.

    Thanks for putting this together…

    Nile,

This was a great viewing for me and well done. I use this method of checking all my settings on a monthly basis. So, many comments to go through I wish there was a way to delete all of them and start from the beginning.

I love how you navigated through all areas that make managing your site a breeze. Now people can handle keeping their own sites updated to be involved in the whole process.

Nile, your amazing and the talent you have is remarkable. Thank you for the refresher course and commentluv is a required add to all our sites. It makes life so much easier.

Interesting video, I didn’t know about this quick way of commenting about the comment actually.

In case if you have been victim of comment spamming attack, I would recommend a plugin called “Delete pending comments”, to quickly remove all the comments, as we know – normally you have to remove them in 20 comments bulk maximum. Good video.
