WordPress Video: How to Import Posts From One WordPress Site To Another WordPress Site

By Nile Flores 38 Comments

In another article, I posted a video on how to export posts in WordPress. In this article, using the WordPress administration backend, you will learn how to import posts from one WordPress powered website to another WordPress site.

The area in the WordPress backend that deals with importing content is under Tools > Import.

    Nile,

Most people have no clue about the function of the import and export tools so this is a great video tutorial. If the XML file is too big to upload in one fell swoop, you said you need to upload it in pieces. So that would require us to export sections of the database and then import sections of the database, correct?

When it automatically downloads and imports attached files, like images and stuff (in that box you checked at the bottom) for the images in the blog post, does the WordPress site you imported from have to still be online so the installer can find those graphic images? That is something I could never understand about that check box.

    Thanks so much for sharing.

Jim, to handle the “upload in pieces” situation, you simply need to use a splitting tool to crop the xml file correctly into segments (you can’t easily do this by hand). Here’s some information on how to manage the xml file when the upload limit on the host is too low for the entire file to be uploaded at once: http://just-ask-kim.com/optimize-or-compress-wordpress-import-xml-file-to-solve-out-of-memory-errors-on-import/#.UGkD-U3A_dw

Hi Kim! If you do not want to fool with code, WordPress is cool enough that you can keep re-importing the XML file until everything has been imported.

Migrations from WordPress to WordPress, whether .com or .org, is really painless. While you do have to install the plugin, it’s super easy and works like a champ. If the file is too big it can be cropped and uploaded in pieces. (My link for info on that is in another comment.)

PS: Make sure your mic volumne is turned up in your system audio so that your recording audio is not so low 🙂

Nile, that was a great tutorial and very easy to follow. I use the import and export once a week to even back up my blog content. You never know what may happen and I do not want all those articles wasted away.

Your information is great for showing importing from other blogs and I have sites from old code and wonder is it the same and compatible?

I have many sites that I had to build with code. I just wondered if the WordPress tool will convert all files to be compatible?

Nile, your great with all our technical needs and support. You do an amazing job keeping us updated and answering the question that may be on our minds yet we do not know how to formulate it to make sense.

I do use a screen share system now with all my consults and meetings. It works great and allow them to navigate will I just watch and guide. This way we are teaching one to teach another. This action give courage and empowers them to coach others right.

Great content I just used for myself prior to arriving again on you site. This is one of my one stop solution areas to answer questions I may need a refresher course on. Thanks again Nile your one of the best coaches in this industry.

    Thanks for this Nile.
(I wrote a really long reply before but my connection went off when I tried to post it!)

In a nutshell, I had to copy and paste all my 114 blog posts over to my new blog because I didn’t know how to do this. It was a nightmare because I then had to rewrite all of the titles and descriptions.

I think my problem was more the inport/export facility within wordpress because it just didn’t work and it was driving me mad and kept saying “corrupted file”

Anyway, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
