It is possible to have your email list and your website hosted together, but it really isn’t a good idea. In fact, I’ll tell you why.
Why Having Your Email List And Website On the Same Account is a Bad Idea
As you website grows, and you gain more traffic, you’re going to be using more resources. The same can be said of your email list for your newsletters. For some business website owners and bloggers, they use their content management system to host their site and send out newsletter. For example, in WordPress, the plugin MailPoet 2 allows WordPress users to maintain their own newsletters from the backend of their CMS.
This is a disaster waiting to happen. Even if you use the newsletter services that you can install, outside of your CMS, you’re better off hosting your email list outside of your website. Most shared hosts throttle mass emails under 3,000 sends per hour. Besides that, your database can only candle so much at a time. If your shared service doesn’t provide enough web resources to execute emailing or handling the database at the same time, you will face website downtime, or many of your newsletter subscribers not receiving your email.
That is why there are a lot of email newsletter providers available. Just some to list:
These services are strictly geared to host and help you maintain your newsletters. You can customize, set up, and schedule out your own newsletter campaigns whenever you like.
For the beginner who is blogging and maintaining a website on a dime, some of these services may seem expensive. Note – MailChimp actually has a free forever type account that stays free up to 2,000 subscribers, or until you send more than 11,000 emails in a month. This service is great for those not doing much affiliate marketing, as Mailchimp has a strict policy on some of the affiliate marketing programs.
With 3rd party newsletter services, you don’t have to worry about your website going down every time you send out an email to your growing email list.

Hello Nile,
Great piece of information over here 🙂
Yeah people do host their email list as well as their web site on the same account, which can be bad if the list grows
up to a large number. I was doing the same couple of years back when I first started a blog. As there not so much of
people who were coming to my newsletter.
I am to using mailchimp as it is free and I am not much of an affiliate guy so it works well for me.
Thanks for the share.
Shantanu.

Great post! I have been using Mailerlite and I’m very happy with their service. It’s also free up to 1000 subscribers! 🙂 I tried MailChimp before but it was a bit over complicated and not as versatile as Mailerlite.

I was having the same email newsletter issue while on shared hosting. My host even had to disable my index.php script and my blog was down for a whole day because the script was sending too many mails. However, I was told that it is safe sending many mails in vps hosting..

Hey, Nile,
Once again a useful post. I got the problem of slow down my site when i run email list campaign from my site backend. You are absolutely right, the third party email newsletter service doesn’t slow down the server. Now, i am using Aweber for email listing service and it’s so cool. Thanks for sharing an outstanding helpful post.

Nile, thank you for this. This is an important factor to think over. Coming to tools, I have experienced a transition from MailChimp in the past and used others too. However, there are tools that help you customize emails and do so much more than just automating newsletters.
