Why Every Entrepreneur Should Use WordPress

By Nile Flores 93 Comments

Entrepreneurs have a lot of tools available to them when it comes to their website. One of the most powerful tools is WordPress. If someone says it cannot be done with WordPress, they either have no imagination or lack the skills to make any website project happen. I’m going to make a very bold statement that every entrepreneur should use WordPress and I will tell you why.

Before I get into explaining out my bold statement, I want to make sure that if you are an entrepreneur, you need to get out of whatever ways you are stuck in. If it helps your business in the end, you should become more open-minded. It is hard to learn anything new if you are not open to it. People like to say something is tough and give up easily because they were already closed to the idea before giving it a chance. How can your business thrive if you apply that same mentality to other areas, and not just your online business?

What Is WordPress? Short Sweet Pitch for the Entrepreneur

WordPress is a content management program that allows you to use your website without having to fool with your theme or takes gobs of time to update. Whether it is you or someone you hired, you can quickly create pages, blog articles, upload and sell products, interact with customers, and even collect leads. Oh, and it is easy to learn to use.

Practical Business Uses for WordPress

WordPress can do a lot of things. However, this is for entrepreneurs. So, here is the list of practical business uses for WordPress:

  • Landing pages and Squeeze pages
  • Contact forms for lead generation and list building
  • Solely List building
  • e-Commerce – Digital downloads
  • e-Commerce – Products
  • Membership Sites (digital downloads, information, products, etc…)
  • Product or Informational Forums
  • Small niche cost per click and advertising sites
  • Applications specific to your business
  • Reservations and event sales
  • Auction and freelance bidding sites
  • Bill payment and credit card processing companies
  • Website Directory for businesses
  • Adult Pay Per View Sites
  • Portfolio site for Construction, Photography, Web Design, Interior Design, and more
  • Video membership site
  • Website for local, corporate, or international businesses
  • A site that is mobile responsive

And this is just a small portion of the long list of what WordPress can do for nearly any business niche. Now there are other way to use WordPress, but these are uses that are either commonly used or ways that if you are newer to WordPress as an entrepreneur that you can build an online business.

Really, instead of asking what can WordPress do for you… why not ask, what YOU can do with WordPress? WordPress is available for anything you need it to do. Like I wrote earlier, aside from the list I shared, WordPress can do a lot more!

You do not have to have a static site and install a bunch of different scripts to get what you need. You can install WordPress, some plugins that do what you need and have one central location to manage your entire website! Wow… pretty cool, huh? 🙂

Learning How To Use WordPress

Learning WordPress does depend on how willing you are to learn something new. Not everyone has the patience or may be open-minded. There are free video tutorials out there to help you learn WordPress.

It is a lot easier than opening up a PHP or HTML file and manually coding your new content into your website. Aside from that, there are great themes you can buy, and even affordable designers to help you brand your online business uniquely.

Even if you want to do it yourself, there tutorials and information is available for free and also for purchase. Relying on services with selecting, drag, and drop elements together to make your site is limited. And some are even expensive… requiring you to even use their hosting. They boast that your site will be different from others, but if you look closely at their available portfolio, most of the sites have an extremely similar look.

With WordPress, you can brand yourself successfully and uniquely, and in the end have less maintenance. This is making your website work for you while you do what needs to be done, networking and connecting with people who might be interested in what your business is all about.

Do you use WordPress in a unique way? Do you have a site that is not entirely on WordPress, and wonder if WordPress can do it? Are you still skeptical?

A lot of people and business owners actually trusted WordPress.
It’s the main platform they trust ever since. Because of the many features of WordPress like their good plugins and user friendly environment, many business owners find it more reliable than any other blog platforms.

I was a newbie to WordPress some time ago, I only thought that there are the “grey” type of themes, that are really “bloggy”, however later a friend of mine showed that it can look just as a normal website, which is great! Easy updating, easy navigation, etc. I believe that WordPress will stand strong both in near and far futre due to its ability to adapt to one’s need. Still using it and will continue to. 🙂 Great post, good read.

    Hi Nile,
wow, what a great list of uses for WordPress!

A few years I learned how to create a website from scratch, using code in a computer course.

When I came across WordPress I was amazed how much this platform provides, never mind the extra possible plugins. I felt I had arrived at a candy store, spoiled for choice.

    Thank you for sharing this.

I can’t imagine working with any other platform than WordPress. I will admit however, that when I first tried my hand at blogging, I made the same goof a lot of newbies do and set up my site on WordPress.com because of course it was free. Hey, I didn’t know the different – it was all WP to me! Fortunately it didn’t take long for me to figure out the benefits of growing my blog on a self-hosted site, so I didn’t lose much time.

    Nile,

Love this article. Someone at a local Networking event told me he did a little research on WordPress and feels that it’s a poor man’s web design tool. I told him: “Shhhh. Don’t tell that to the Wall Street Journal, cause they use WordPress.” LOL. Wow, some people are still stuck in their old ways and so sadly misinformed. Here’s a link: http://wordpress.org/showcase/the-wall-street-journal-law-blog/

If you want to shut a naysayer right down, tell them to google: “Fortune 500 Companies using WordPress.” Doh!

And that’s what’s so freakin’ cool about WordPress. If you are a home-based business owner, a small business owner or a Fortune 500 company, the exact same FREE WordPress installation is all you need to look like a champion — especially if you got a WordPress Web Designer like Nile Flores to Kick it Up a Notch!

I have a webcomic blog that is entirely based on wordpress so it’s as versatile for displaying cartoons and images (e.g. for portfolio sites) as it is for text-based content.

WordPress is a well-structured and high-powered machine. You can download themes, yes. But I would suggest finding a company that builds sites customized to you and your companies needs, with a CMS WordPress back end. That way you get the beautiful site you envisioned, but in an easy-to-maintain system.

    Hi Niles,

Great job calling our attention to many WordPress benefits. When I started my business four years ago, my business coach suggested that I create a WordPress blog right away and I did. I recall her telling me that blogging with WordPress was a great way to increase traffic to my store and make more sales. She told me to find out what my readers want and give it to them, listen to what my existing customers need and write about it in my blog, write information that is relevant to my industry, and to add content in blog posts that provides solutions to my existing customers’ problems. Glad that I heeded her advice.

Hi Zeeshan! You can use WordPress.com and it is free. As for hosting and using the WordPress.org free and open source version, you are looking at the wrong web hosts if they are expensive. There are a lot of great web hosts that are not that expensive….in fact many are very affordable for even as low as $5 a month (some are even lower.) I am fairly sure you are still new to blogging… so don’t give up yet.

Blogger is not a great choice and if you want to talk about down time… you cannot force Google to get your site back up. You have no choice and have to wait. You are also limited in being able to sell or have certain advertisements, AND you have to adhere to their terms of service.

While there are some good suggestions here that are applicable to most entrepreneurs, I don’t think WordPress is the right choice for everyone. Especially for those who are new to earning money online, for many users it will be easier to gain control of the Blogger platform for a niche blog. That has been my experience, at least. I started off with Blogger, tried out WordPress after reading posts of more successful bloggers like yourself, and then I ultimately switched back to Blogger.

Unfortunately, you are held up with Google Blogger’s terms of service. You cannot have affiliate links. You cannot have certain 3rd party ad platforms. Yu are not suppose to accept sponsored post opportunities or paid endorsements. You can only have Adsense.

Free services have a lot of limitations, and when they are down, you are at their mercy and don’t have a phone support system to rely on, or support that will answer you through live support to tell you when you might be back up. I’ve used Blogger, and it is okay but if I were to downgrade, I’d do Squidoo or Tumblr or WordPress.com. In another post, Blogger versus WordPress, WordPress hands down in a side by side comparison beats Blogger.

You get full control of your software and your website with WordPress.

Definitely WordPress has unlimited uses, and it’s also very easy for anyone to create whatever websites they want.

I’ve recently created a membership website using WordPress and it works like a charm.

Also the huge number of plugins that are available, further extend the use of WordPress. What I like most is that with time you start to learn a bit of PHP and CSS , and make little customizations to your theme.

    Great post, very detailed.

Have a great day Nile, cheers.

I actually just finished coding a wordpress from scratch. It was the first time I had actually coded anything and it was super easy. I highly recommend giving it a shot.

One word of advice though, Javascript is really hard to get working properly so for more complicated things you might have to find a plugin. BUT, be careful with how many plugins you install because they can really slow down your site.

In the future, I’ll probably use Twitters “bootstrap” for landing pages and just integrate the wordpress blog. it’ll lead to faster loading on main pages while still having a well organized blog section.

As wordpress provides us a very easy to use interface for blogging. There’s nothing to do with languages. So everyone can start their own blog without having much knowledge of languages.

Earlier WordPress was just a blogging platform. There were no extra features available to customize, to give better look, etc., but now WordPress has revolutionary changes which makes it quite useful for every Internet marketer.

I use WordPress to build sites for all my clients. It’s an awesome system, very flexible and easy to use. It’s not only for making blogs, it can power websites that have the classic look many business owners are after. The big advantage for them is that they can change their texts without having to pay me each time to do it.

    Great article.

Yes, I always tell my clients to use WordPress. One of my client, use some software than wordpress. Although his company is media and magazine in Singapore, there are lots of restrictions while the websites does not have wordpress. For example, it is not easy to put blog articles on the website for updating Singapore magazine news, luxury watches, and men’s fashion. At this moment, I hope I can discuss with him and change his mind!

On the other hand, my own business is using wordpress. It is indeed easy to set up online store, but it is also easy to have plug in for funny tweets on Twitter. As one of my job is to blog funny tweets on Twitter for my funny cool tshirt design, WordPress makes my blogging much easier and simple.
