What To Do When Your to Blog Inspiration Hits A Dry Spell

By Nile Flores 45 Comments

Sometimes blog inspiration might seem hard to come by. What can you do to prevent hitting that dry spell? Inspiration can come from many places, but it is how you harness it that counts. However, there are factors that can get in the way of getting your words to jump to your mind and onto your blog.

Well, you need to think about your blogging habits:

  • When do you normally blog? In the evening? In the morning? Midday?
  • Have you eaten properly?
  • Are you having some type of exercise, even in small increments of time, like 10-20 minutes.
  • Have you done your homework by reading around your niche and a little outside of it to keep on top of the news?
  • Are you blogging way to frequently?
  • Does blogging have to be done in a rush?
  • Are you just painfully continuing to blog in a niche you no longer have enough material to provide for?

All of the above factors can affect your blog habits. You do need to blog when you are most creative because this is when you will at least have that extra oomph to get that article done. Also, never rush blogging. If you have an article you think you have to squeeze in before a certain time, you really do not. You are not putting a newspaper to bed for publishing on the next day. Your thoughts might be rushed and not come across as logical as it should.

Yes, your health can be a big factor! If you are ill or not eating properly, you could be running low on both energy and the brain power to even get through the day. Make sure you are eating well and incorporating a few exercises. Some bloggers may even freelance online, so that means those who are living the freelancing lifestyle need to take extra care. 10 or 20 minutes might make a difference. Remember in health class – exercise encourages your body to release endorphins. Endorphins make you happy and a bit more energetic.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK! You might not have a boss overlooking… wait – YOU ARE YOUR OWN BOSS! Make sure to keep yourself on target and do your research. Surf the sites you enjoy, read from people within and outside of your niche. You never know – someone might write an article that you may have a response well worth writing your own blog post.

The biggest thing of all in this is that if you are just doing this for the money and not because you are at least passionate about it – STOP! Most people who are passionate about certain topics are more than likely able to nit pick everything apart and find something new to write about. They are also more willing to do the research and stay on top of the game.

These are merely some things to think about when your blogging inspiration hits a dry spell. However, I know others have their own rituals – so what do you recommend?

Hitting a dry spell when writing a blog post or a web content is never fun. It is quite exasperating. However, you can rise above this if you know where to get motivation to get your writing juices running again. Me, I find it through looking at what my kids are doing, reading stuff on the Internet or resting my mind a bit by playing some games.

I do love to blog, most often I was able to create article for my blog after midnight since during that time I feel at ease and concentrated. Every time I run out of topic to write what I do is visit a blog that has high traffic, it gives me inspiration in the sense that I want my blog to be the same in the future.

Great tips Niles. I hit one of those roadblocks last fall and even ended up rewriting a few older posts just to keep momentum going. What I finally realized was I’d gotten off track from my original mission for the blog. After some serious introspection I made some relatively minor adjustments and since then haven’t run out of ideas. It really pays to periodically invest in a review to stay on track.

These are great ideas, Nile. Sometimes, it just seems to be that we run a little bit short in the inspiration department. Not all the time, for sure, but every once in a while.

On occasion, I have found that working at something else, like yard work, or painting, or even doing the dishes, helps that fog to clear away a bit. And when it does, not only are the dishes clean and ready to use again, but the words come a bit more easily. 🙂

I feel the pressure to get at least one blog posted a week. But I realize the world is not going to end, people in TSA won’t think ill of me if I miss or am late. After all I see where some bloggers post less than once a month.
Relax, I tell myself. Enjoy it or get out of it.
Thanks Nile for your reassuring words and great tips!

I know I need to take time away from the computer to really think about my blog posts. I often make lists of good blog post ideas to use at a later date. I have also put in titles into my WordPress of blogs I want to write. I just save the draft for a later date.

Great post, in short, it is all about being in the zone. You need to do whatever it takes to be in the zone to write effective posts/articles. I usually write best early in the morning and I only write when I feel inspired.

It is hard to post unique, relevant, & helpful posts every day. Experiencing a dry spell in creative writing is something that probably all bloggers go through. Some people think that you must write a blog post every day, that this keeps Google loving your blog because of the content. A lot of bloggers forget this & keep writing, not realizing that it’s their readers that are affected! When you hit a dry slump, just do what I do! I walk away from it for a day or two. Read another blog, like this one! I love Blondish! See how other people are writing great content, & how you can apply these techniques to your posts.

Sometimes I think of lots of different topics I want to write about, so I add draft posts to my blog, with those topics, and whatever idea I have.

Then later on, when I have time, I’ll go back and write the full post.

Thanks for your ideas Nile! Regards from Julieanne

A great article Nile. All the factors you mention do play a huge roll in blogging and some people may not think so. My inspiration often hits me during my sleep when my brain is most active. Not the most appropriate time. I think its very important to lay your blogging habits out so that you are aware and make changes if need be to make your writing that much better.

All bloggers get the “writer´s block” at some point. When it happens to me I usually go for a long walk to clear my mind. When I get back I start reading marketing forums to see if people have some questions that I could answer in a blog post.Magazines and even TV commercials have sometimes helped me come up with great blog post ideas.

One thing that worked for me was getting my customers to indirectly write blog posts for me. I’d ask them for pictures and stories of them using our products, and since we supply custom promotional products, I got some pretty interesting stuff back. All I had to do at that point was piece the information together to make coherent posts.

Those were some great suggestions. Sometimes, I find myself blocked, and like you mentioned, it’s a good time to write when you feel creative. If I lose a little focus, I’ll try to get that focus back by changing my physiology by jumping up and down or some other quick exercise, which goes with your mention of exercising to get the energy up. Another way to get focus back is to mentally go to a fun or good memory to get you back in the mood.

If this will happen, maybe you can convert your attention to any point or you may unwind your self and have a break to your work. Take a walk for a while to energize and refresh your mind, body and soul.

Blogging is not simple taks, you need to have that passion. Find subject to attract your readers communicate with them. Ask them if you have published new stuff on your blog. It will help you to get feedback about your post at the same time. The visitors will be happy as you have taken feedback from them.

What’s funny is that I rarely struggle for inspiration on what to write but it’s the physical action of sitting at my laptop and typing it up that sometimes annoys me!

My laptop gets really hot and I don’t have one of those cooling fans. This limits the amount of time I like to sit down with the laptop on me and I also get distracted by the tv. I know, I should turn it off but with the Euros and Wimbledon on at the mo it’s bloody difficult! : )

We all know health is wealth. Surprisingly, a pill, which is produced from tomatoes, can protect sunbathers from wrinkled skin and can make tans last longer, its makers have claimed.

I have read this article on skin care which is very helpful in terms of knowledge.
