Backlinks have long been regarded by the SEO community as the “holy grail.” We’ve been told that if you don’t have a high Domain Authority (DA) or a massive portfolio of guest posts, you might as well not exist on Google.

However, as of 2026, Google’s algorithms are much more sophisticated than just counting links. The search engine is now more concerned with user satisfaction and topical authority than raw link volume due to the emergence of Search Generative Experience (SGE) and AI-driven intent matching.

Is it possible to rank without a single backlink? The answer is definitely yes for keywords with low to medium competition. By mastering everything else, you can at least get within striking distance of high-competition terms.
