Klout’s New Algorithm Not A Winner With Fans

By Nile Flores 25 Comments

Klout, an Izea property that measures how much reach and influence a person has over several social network platforms recently rolled out a new algorithm. Along with this, an influx of angry users due to their major drops in their Klout scores.

According to Klout, they score individuals based on three areas: True Reach, Amplification, and Network Impact.

Together these mean that Klout measures how many people you really are reaching, and if you are influencing them to actually do something. For example, doing something could mean retweeting a link or your words, or even talking with you.

According to Klout’s post A More Accurate, Transparent Klout Score they added subscores to allow you to see how your score has changed. They also mention that there may be people that do have drops, but significant ones are rare.

A lot of people use Klout for advertising, whether for their own website, or even monetizing their Facebook or Twitter Streams. Izea definitely uses this in consideration with working with advertisers for SponsoredTweets and some of their other properties.

As for this new algorithm, for those who experienced that “rare” significant drop in score, is it just the new Klout system trying to catch up, or how flawed is Klout.

Here are some of the reactions in the community.

From Twitter:

Oh, and do not forget about Yoda!

What are your thoughts on Klout, either before or after this new algorithm implementation?

    Hi Nile,

I don’t think if Klout does really provide users accurate algorithm regarding social media real score. Well for me, I post and mingle to other Facebook,Twitter and Google +1 users to stay active in social media sites.

I take grades like Klout with a grain of salt, I went down a bit but not too much.

I’m not too big of a fan of Klout and although my klout dropped 16 points it doesn’t mean much to me. It’s just a score measuring influence by a unidentifiable algorithm.

Now for those that lose money cause of people not wanting to buy ads from them they have the right to be upset.

Several of my friends got burned by Klout. I am not a twitter user yet, but in the process of getting it all set up and figuring out how I want to run it.

I agree with Tim that some people definitely have a right to be upset when they are losing money over what happened.

Well I guess we’ll see how Klout responds to these complaints and if anything significant gets done about it.

Totally unexpected sudden change. I recently started focusing on Klout and a big disappointment. 🙁

Another “ranking” system for people to get upset about when they don’t rank well.

How relevant is Klout? There can only be so many ranking systems before some of them eventually don’t mean anything.

I haven’t check my Klout since then, but I’m not too affected by it. I can’t do anything with it, right? Even if I scream my heart out. Thanks for your article, it’s very informative and it kept me updated.

Well, I do not take Klout really much seriously because I find it more like Alexa, it does not accurately depict the social media influence of a person. I am sure the scores are just an assumption but anyways I have seen few changes in Klout recently and yes like others my score also got down quite a bit

I’ve noticed more and more people touting their klout scores left and right, I wasn’t aware of the new unpopular algorithm. However I don’t take too much stock in klout anyway, I’ve found the correlation between “likes” (etc) and real-world popularity to be dubious…

I had a drop in Klout scores after the update. But frankly, I’m over it. I can’t live or die by what some computer algorithm thinks of me or my social influence. I did think the whole thing was handled rather poorly.

Klout has a lot to fix. Right now, I do not have faith in its parent company Izea. They also own several online products that use to work well, but just have become pointless to use. For a company wanting to make money by “word of mouth” online type ventures, they have lost some of their original values. I would not be surprised if Klout does not improve.

I’m not as well large of a admirer of Klout and though my klout dropped sixteen factors it doesn’t imply a lot to me. It is just a score measuring affect by a unidentifiable algorithm. Now for individuals that lose funds result in of men and women not seeking to acquire adverts from them they have the correct to be upset.
