Infographics – Keep It Simple To Put Forth The Most Effective Message

By Nile Flores 45 Comments

Infographics are really a great addition for any blog or for anyone in particular trying to put a message together that is visually pleasing and will effectively give a quick message to their intended audience.

The problem is- infographic creation is getting way out of hand. There are some that are great and take only seconds to get the point. Then, there are also long images chock full of information that would be of better use in a blog post or perhaps even a series of blog articles.

People do not have time to view long articles or even long images. Often, with the fact that there are graphic packages available, people are creating their own infographics that are just messy and hard to read in the order it was intended. On top of that, the fact that anyone with a website today must think about dial-up users and mobile browsing users as these huge images are not necessarily an asset.

Here are some suggestions when creating an infographic.

  • Keep the message simple. If it is necessary to include a lot of words, perhaps making a blog post would be best, and then putting together a smaller infographic that will summarize your message. This might be the best method as it uses a couple mediums to convey your message, instead of just one.
  • Do not make a huge graphic. Try making your infographic so the reader does not have to scroll on the image. If the infographic requires more, perhaps having an infographic is not best. Maybe a PDF or ebook would be best? Or perhaps, a series of blog posts?
  • Space images within the infographic without making it cluttered. Cluttered messages are hard to read and sometimes a there may be no clear order of direction in reading the graphic.
  • Choose colors that are pleasing to the eye. If you are unclear about what looks good together, try visiting Colourlovers.com and finding a color palette that is suitable.
  • The ifographic’s design can be as fancy or as simple as can be, but you need to make sure that the message is clear and concise.

The K.I.S.S. method is important, so please… for the most effective way of marketing to an audience using infographics… keep it simple!

What other suggestions do you have for people who like to use or create infographics?

I usually rely on Jasc Paint Shop Pro, Corel, or Photoshop for creating infographics.

          Really? Corel or photoshop?

I have never thought it could be possible with Corel or Photoshop. I thought you have to subscribe to one expensive software because of what people charge to design one for you

I have to confess to being a big fan of infographics Nile but I concur with what you say some of these graphics are chock full of information and those really defeat the object. I like infographics that hit me with facts at a glance. I really don’t mind the scrolling so much but I appreciate keeping anything above the fold of a web page is preferable to visitors.

Infographics are not always easy to make if you do not have a clear message. The message comes first. The cool graphics second. I may put together an infographic tutorial in the near future.

Interestingly, the one time we had professionals help us with an infographic, we ended up doing most of the actual design, coming up with the data to highlight, images, etc. In the end, it probably would have made more sense for us to just use our regular designer or learn to do it ourselves!

I agree with your ideas. Simple is always better, especially when trying to explain something that can be complicated. Let the visuals do the heavy lifting and throw in some awesome facts to make things fresh.

Nice concept you have highlighted, I’m a visual type of person, I really love reading infographics. Great Infographics contain effective narratives and enlightening content. I like it’s visual presentation and the information is brief so I’m not having a hard time absorbing the details as compare to reading long sentences of an article.

However not all infographics are worth a read. An Inforgraphic that shows nothing but numbers/statistics really bores me.

    Nile,
Well put, with some valuable guidelines. I have never made an infographic and would not know where to begin! But I do agree simplicity would be the best thing. Too much, too busy is not a good thing, as it may detract from what you are trying to get across. I like infographics because I am a visual learner and pictures speak louder than words sometimes.
    Have a great day,
    Lynn

I thought it was just me. Infographics seem to EVERYWHERE! I have seen some infographics that were just heavy and duds on information, others were packed with 100 articles worth of information and I’ve often wondered how much do these cost and why? Simple is good. I don’t need a ton of information, niche it for me and just keep it simple. Thanks for validating that thought!1

    Nile,
Well put, with some valuable pointers. I actually have ne’er created associate infographic and wouldn’t recognize wherever to begin! however I do agree simplicity would be the most effective issue. Too much, too busy isn’t an honest issue, because it could take away from what you’re attempting to induce across. i favor infographics as a result of i’m a visible learner and photos speak louder than words typically.

Infographics essentially easier for people to digest something (image infographic) compared to regular text and images, in other words infographics is the way in which complex data represented through images. There are limitless ways to represent the information and it depends largely on the skill of the designer and his imagination. More and more businesses realize the importance of infographics in this world makes designers as very important in the search. The question Is this technique can be done on a free blog? thank you-christian-westjava lawendatu-Indonesia

I think infographics were fun when they were fairly new, but now it’s getting a bit oversaturated. They take a long time to create and the return is not really there any longer.

    Just an opinion, of course…

Idea of infographics is simple convert data to simple graphic design to add fun and life.

However some are just not making any sense that if you look at their infographic they have more graphics and less information.

there should be a balance between graphics and data
