I thought about my post Let Your Followers Decide Who the Expert Is and put together a short infographic that I think goes perfect. I am pretty passionate about the fact that people who claim they are a guru or expert are not letting their followers say it for them.
Anyone looking to build authority should let their work be what people will decided whether they are an expert or not. It is okay to believe you are an expert, and you might be, but when it comes to people who do not know you, they do not know what to trust or believe.
This is for those telling people they are experts before anyone knows who they are. I call it Expert #FAIL.

I think that the best way to know an expert is not when he says he is an expert rather on what you can see, if he can deliver results.

Yep, one thing we have no shortage of online is experts. I think the most important thing is to get to the point where you can trust your own instincts because all too often even the ‘real’ experts disagree and if you settle for always being the ‘follower’ you’ll make yourself crazy.
Jenn says
Haha, that’s cute – and quite on the mark!

Hi Nile, Just re-visited your last post and it is awesome. Yes, we are experts (well most of us anyway) because
l. We paid for many learning webinars and groups
2. We are constantly learning with rapid changes and have to be on top of things.
3. We share our information with others, thereby giving us credibility.
4. When we syndicate someone’s blog, we are learning from that too.
5. For someone that doesn’t know what we are teaching in our niche, we are experts in their eyes because they do not have that knowledge.
Awesome Nile I thank you for bringing this to people’s attention.

lol. Like the graphics. There are alot of so called ‘experts’ that they don’t know what they are talking about. But in real life people ussualy listen to those people and much more they even do what they say.

This is hilarious and so true. Great post!

Image is so funny. Real expert doesn’t have to brag about it, it just comes out naturally by word of mouth from friends and acquaintance of the expert.

Nile, this is a great article and one I get the feeling you have been hosting soo many seminars on this and that. Then when you here someone else speak after all the week hype on this unknown person. You get nothing from their presentation yet the believe you should have based on their vast knowledge and years in the business.
I know so many out their want to be known as a expert and once they have been paid even $1.00 they are officially experts. They got paid for their services makes them an expert.
Now, there is a huge difference in leading by example and sharing you experiences in a way with people that motivates them and betters their lives. That is a great coach, mentor, leader and visionary. Which all are naturally motivative speakers, not experts. Experts handly objecvts such as machines, tangible objects. Not people. People can not be managed we must be nutured.
So, my hats of to those who claim to be an expert in any field. They are the ones who end up giving our industry a bad name.
Greate article Nile and your one of our powerful technical supportive people in this industry. Lots of qaulity information on navigation and the supportive functions of our business platforms with tools. That is a huge benefit and one that we all appreciate.
Looking forward in your next amazing article.

haha! I come across this far too often

I’m really tired about people who claims to be experts in some areas, but nobody knows about them, so it’s really relevant stuff. :))
Gracie says
I define an expert as someone who has special knowledge on a subject that goes beyond what a well informed person might know. An expert has knowledge that he built up with experience. I would think that is why ‘expert’ and’ experience’ are similiar words.

Mind blowing …
Small image and contains much information.

So true! There are calling themselves an expert but nothing can prove.

Nile,
Great Infographic. You are getting to be the Infographic Expert, I see! LOL The spirit of your blog post is well taken. There are far too many experts, ESPECIALLY Social Media Marketing “Experts” that just don’t know that much information. Perhaps “specialist” would be considered a better term for most people. I have used WordPress and The Thesis Theme for over two years now and still don’t consider myself an “expert” at either. I would say that I am perhaps a WordPress, Thesis, Blogging specialist on my way to becoming an expert but NOT in the next month or two. On the other hand, there are some experts out there, whom I’ve met at MeetUp groups, for example, that are not well known. But the point of the infographic, is, like I said, well taken. Because the problem is that people who’ve been doing Facebook and Twitter for six months start promoting webinars and such calling themselves “experts” and that’s just wrong. I remember growing up when it took YEARS to become an EXPERT at ANYTHING!
Thanks for sharing!

Nile,
(delete — It says I get clicked on Google + and retweeted and it said “thanks” and that I get more links because of my prior comments here, but it STILL only gives me 5 links! Just thought you’d want to know that.)

An excellent view of a practice that is all too frequent in the online world. People self-describing themselves with no backup. I am actually a big supporter of self naming, especially when its used to build rather than tear down. But when you want to be known as an expert, you kinda need something to back that up.
Pinned it to and now Blondish is on the ALOL VIP List. ๐

We tend, I think, to travel in familiar circles around the Internet and know in our own area who is an expert and who’s blowing hot air. I would suggest (and I will take my own advice) getting out into other arenas on the Internet and see who they claim to be is an expert.
I think also that the Infographic is an interesting format. With the decline in the willingness to read it makes sense that this modality should be coming into play. Ray Bradbury (author of “Fahrenheit 451”) is wondering if this view of the future is closer than we think.
I’m in favor of keeping the written word in blogging!
Thanks, Nile. Always intriguing.

Oh my life there are plenty out there there Nile… the self proclaimed gurus and experts, they are their own mutual appreciation society and don’t they spout some nonsense between them! It’s a shame not everyone sees these people with the same clarity that we do and are taken in by them. ๐
I love your infographic … Jeez I’m a big fan of them all round!
I’ve Pinned It with a link back to this post ๐

nice info-graphic.. Quite impressive .. most of the people advertise their expertness but when it comes to the actual work their original face comes up. That’s why I believe practical things more than theoretical.
Chris says
Hehe.. wow thats reality. I can relate to these..I found people amusing.. telling other people to be successful and stuff but they themselves can make themselves successful.

Hi Nile:
Yep, your infographic hits the nail right on the head. We have way too many self-proclaimed experts in our world.
