How You Can Use NaNoWriMo To Your Advantage as A Blogger

By Nile Flores 14 Comments

nanowrimo-200x200Every November, it’s time for NaNoWriMo, which is National Novel Writing Month. I’ve participated in NaNoWriMo for years, but this year, it got me to think on what bloggers could do during this month.

The purpose of NaNoWrimo is to encouarage people to write and be creative, as well as have fun. The goal for each NaNoWriMo participant, is to write about 50,000 in 30 days. That equals about 1,667 words per day! So what can you do as a blogger, especially if you’re not so keen on writing fiction?

If you’ve been wanting to participate, well, here are a few ideas. Some of them… well, you may want to combine.

How You Can Use NaNoWriMo To Your Advantage as A Blogger

1. Blog once or twice a day. This may be rough to put together 1 post with nearly 1700 words, so you may find trying a few smaller posts really easy to do.

Try finding inspiring quotes related to your niche and talking about them. You could even use images or infographics or videos (of course, give credit where it’s due.)

By the time you’re done writing your posts, you can schedule them out, and have loads of content to publish on your website. Sure, you’ll be a blog writing machine, but you’ll be blogging and keeping your content flowing. 😉

2. Write some ebooks. These could fill up your time, and you can put together a short free ebook, as well as a longer ebook that you can sell. You could pump out a small ebook in 10,000 words, which is around 20-pages, depending on the typeface size!

This is definitely an ideal time you could do it. In fact, you may want to try the local write-ins, which are like meetups. You may find some inspiration amongst the other NaNoWriMo participants.

Yes, I wrote 2 ideas, because each of these, you can spin a lot of content from. The potential is there to write 50,000 words. You are the one that has to decide if you want to try the challenge or not. If you decide to, then you can only benefit in the end from such a challenge.

Have you participated in NaNoWrimo, and used it to jumpstart your blogging?

It’s tempting. But I guess it would be an impossible mission for me to acomplish such a big task at the rythm I’m writing lately. Believe me, I would love to be able to, but I think I’m so much of a procrastinator lately and this would be a nice ocasion to put an end to that, but 50000 words in a month? I just can say, Wow.

Hi Nile, I wanted to ask you something. What software did you use to write and edit your ebook and how did you do to make it downloadable by new suscribers? Can´t find if you have a tutorial on this matter. Thanks in advance!

    Hello Nile,
I really like your strategies. Thanks for sharing this very vital piece of information. But it seems a bit challenging if you’re a part-time blogger. Notwithstanding, i picked alot from her. Thanks alot.

I’ve been contemplating an ebook lately, maybe I just need to go for it. My excuse is my kids. I have a 3-year old who is only in preschool 2 mornings a week, so I have very little uninterrupted writing time. One day!

Some really good ideas in here to make the most of NaNoWriMo here, Nile!

One suggestion I would make for people who struggle with the idea of writing 1,667 words a day is to look at using voice transcription software like Dragon Naturally Speaking. You may not be able to write 1,667 words in an hour but you can almost certainly speak it. And finding an hour a day for NaNoWriMo is usually doable for most people.

    That’s quite a challenge Nile!

But i really like your idea of writing a few ebooks, of
    10,000 words each.

And if you do attempt to sell one and use the other as a lead generator,
    like you suggested.

You just accomplished two goals, plus you’re only 30,000 words or less,
    from your overall goal!

Thanks for sharing two really helpful ideas!
