As a blogger, you probably have met quite a few people. You probably have some regular readers, and maybe interact with the same number of people. Not that they are boring, but after some time, you might find yourself stagnate in your site’s progress. It might be from lack of knowledge in a topic, or perhaps a problem reaching new crowds. I am going to share with you on how to widen your blog circle.
Your blog circle currently consists of the following:
- Your regular readers and commentators
- Your subscribers
- Your social network followers
Within these numbers are a small core of people who you interact with the most. A lot of times these are the people are both influence and learn from you. Often you will find yourself in a niche that is similar or has some overlapping, so some of your articles may be similar. The thing is that you only go to their sites and comment, and they do the same. This is great in some ways, but you forget one thing: there are more people in the world that you could be connecting and learning from (and with.)
Of course, your Internet routine may be different but aside from email, reading news sites, and other things, for bloggers, reading other blogs, commenting, and social networking are also part of that regimen. So, knowing this, if you do the same thing every day, reading the same blogs, commenting on the same blogs, and interacting with the same people on social network sites, you are going to produce nearly the same result every day.
To break out of that, you need to widen your blog circle. In order to do that, you have to connect with people you have not connected before, and read blogs that you have never read before. Of course, this is time consuming, but if you honestly want to break out of blogging doldrums, you really need to liven up some.
Here are some ideas on how you can widen your blog circle:
- When you read another blog in your own blog circle and leave a comment, check out the other commentators. Visit their sites and comment. It would not hurt to also follow them on social networking sites.
- Join forums, Communities on Google+, Yahoo! Groups, and Facebook groups that are relevant to your niche.
- Search on Twitter for hashtag terms or topics that are relevant to your niche and follow people who regularly show up in those results.
- Make a list of 5 to 10 blogs to visit every week. Visit, leave a comment, and connect. Eventually as you become part of their blog circle, visit those who comment on their site.
If you think about it, while these suggestions involve using time, they certainly do not money. A lot of bloggers are not really rolling in the dough to be shelling out the cash for advertising.
Is your site sitting on a plateau in its traffic? Are you not getting out there and connecting with others?
If you are not having these issues, do you have any suggestions on how to widen one’s blog circle?
Sound advice Nile, getting followers is a tough task for many – I do read many hashtags on twitter to find articles that interest me as well.

It’s super important to build relationships with other people to widen your circle. I see a lot of people giving up after so long because their blog doesn’t do anything. It takes time to build relationships and establish that communication that comes from friendship.
I agree with you Wade. It does take time to widen your circles. But it is those relationships that really create all of the opportunity.
Great tips Niles. I’ve met a LOT of new people through LinkedIn groups. It took me awhile to find the right groups – because many of them offer little in the way of interaction. But there are some that are very collaborative in nature and I’ve gone on to connect with members through out blogs and other social media platforms. I must confess, I’m not a fan of FB and use it less and less all the time. In fact not that long ago I set up a new FB page, and now I’m considering deleting it in favor of setting up a Google Community because it’s such a struggle to make myself spend time on FB.

I have been reaching out to more and more sites these days to try freshen up my day. I was finding myself reading more and more of “the same stuff” on the collection of blogs I was visiting and it does get a bit old after a while.
As a result my commenting was getting repetitive. Heck for some content I could have probably gotten away with copy/paste.
Hi Nile! My suggestion: try everything you can! LinkedIn works for some, Facebook for others – some people love the new myspace. There’s a lot of “low-hanging fruit” out there!

Good tips, Nile, and you’re right – sometimes the same people do read and comment over and over, which is GREAT, but it’s also good to grow your audience and bring in more people. I join a lot of groups so I can connect with different people. And checking out the blogs of other commenters is a great idea! You can meet new people and also find some great content that way.

I actually don’t know how I have done it and I don’t target keywords etc. I launched my blog on 24th August 2011 and in its first full year (2012) I had over 115k visitors and 290k page views and for December I had over 13k visitors, which was a new monthly traffic record.
I have about 150 FB friends, about 20 followers on Twitter and about 190 LinkedIn connections. I used to comment on other people’s blogs, but don’t do that much anymore and I don’t do guest posts. My blog articulates Life issues to provide solutions using my experiences…

So true, but the bigger the network the better. I use a lot of social media, participate on blog challenges, blog syndication, ect. I am always looking for new bloggers. I also do look at other blogs comments and if I have some of value I always leave a quality comment.
A lot of times I just go through SEOmoz and check out my comps backlink profile. Populate a huge list and branch out from sites linking to them as well. Also, when I guest post I usually meet about 5-10 people and add them to my circle.
Social media is definitely the way to go especially G+. Nile, I really like the enlarging the blogger circle part. There is so much to be done and sometimes I get over whelmed but I guess we just need to take it one day at a time.
The ups and downs of traffic play up on my mind but then again I have realized that slow and steady wins the SEO game.

thanks so much for your blog post in this topic… I am not into blogging as much as you are and not sure if I can call my self a “Blogger” but as you know I have been writing my blog for a bout 7-8 months now… I think 🙂 During these times, I learned so much from you, and other member as your self… and now, either because I got some more confidence or experience or ego… (probably is the ego mostly:-) I sensed that it is time to widen the circle. Your blog post could not be more on time… because just two days a go, I was talking with my coach and we mentioned this fact.

Very informative post. I think most bloggers fail to extend their circle because they don’t dedicate a specific amount of time for such activities. All of the tips you have mentioned above are now inevitable because blogging and blog promotion are directly related to active interaction with people. After subscribing to a few blogs, I’ve been visiting them in a weekly basis for almost a year. Only recently, someone shared a list of about 300 blogs. That’s when I started to look at other bloggers.

Hi Nile… definitely facing the traffic plateau problem you mention in your post. The blogger community in South Africa is quite small though so have decided to try marketing our recent posts on Facebook instead… hopefully that helps with increasing comments and traffic.
Will definitely try out Google+ too – we have the widget on the site but haven’t focused much on growing the blogging circle using it.

What you’re referring to is what I call “blog incest” and you are right. I basically take advantage of my comments (I have commentluv) and check out other sites that I use to get exposure, as well my guest posts. I wrote a couple of scripts take out the best postings in the rss feeds I am subscribed on. With a predefined set of keywords the scripts looks if there are post in the rss feeds that stands out for me.
This way, I save some time to get posts that are most likely relevant for me.

For bringing traffic to your blog you need to break from your existing circle and expand to wider circle of network that are relevant to your niche. This would help you enrich your content as well as allow memebrs of the network to access your blog. Great share.
I think in addition to widening your circle – it’s important to speak your mind and let who you are come through. A little controversy doesn’t hurt to get the conversation going.

I’ve worked with many novice bloggers who just don’t know how to begin attracting readers and visitors. I usually tell them to join a tribe or blogging community, and I know that’s a good suggestion.
One of the problems, though, is that in blogging communities, you’re not always cross syndicating with people in your niche. The suggestions you’ve give here lend to a much more targeted approach. I really appreciate your wise advice here. I’ll pass it on as if it’s mine… lol.

Awww…you are giving out a lot of valuable information on your blog.
I agree that it is worth spending the time to visit many blogs a week. I am currently planning to read and comment at least 2 blogs a day from various groups and that doesn’t really matter to me if they are from different niche. There is always something to learn from everyone’s blog. Driving different traffic to the blog can be challenging but it is worth the time and effort invested !

I have a hard time keeping up with forums, but I’ve selected a few Facebook groups to focus on, plus I’m looking for new blogs to comment on. I will try some of your other suggestions. It’s super important to build relationships with other people to widen your circle. I see a lot of people giving up after so long because their blog doesn’t do anything. It takes time to build relationships and establish that communication that comes from friendship.

I always have faith in word of mouth and organic results. these alone can bring so much and wide your audience in an exponential way. of course you can’t stay like a mummy in front of the monitor, you have to be active and writing, meeting, commenting, these are all good things.
I am using Twitter and Google +, but they both seem to be saturated with, “come visit my blog/site,” posts. Still learning and tweaking, and hoping for the better results!

During my free time, beside updating my poor blog (huhu..i just a new blogger), i am always do blogwalking and leave a comment on the blog or article that i think help me most. Such as thanks to them or share my opinion. I am not stick on the same blog, so..here i definitely agree with your writing.

My circles are virtually non-existent, but I’m trying my best to widen them. I’m afraid it’s just not something I’m very good at.
