WordPress is more than just a blog and for some, having something different for the front page other than the most recent posts is necessary to make way for other important information that the website owner wants the reader to see.
For example, if you are a consultant who wants to give a brief summary of yourself, an opt-in form, an area for testimonials, and maybe a sales funnel on the front page, but have the blog on a secondary page… well, this is definitely the video tutorial for you.
I do want to note that I do talk a little about WordPress themes, especially for those who may already have a particular theme installed that has template files that are designed for specific pages, like the front page or even the blog page where the most recent posts will populate.
Below is the video screencast on how to make your front page a static page in WordPress.

Hi Nile,
I really appreciate your easy to understand training on how to set up a static page. I learn so much from you and others about WP. I am one of those technically challenged when it comes to adding, rearranging or changing my blog page. I’m afraid I will mess something up! I’ll have to go and check to see what my theme offers. Could your home page be like an about me page?
Your WP expertise is so valuable!

Thanks for sharing. I already know how to most of the “basic” stuff in wordpress, but I get constantly asked by friends on how to do this and that. Usually it’s just easier to redirect them to a video like this than to explain it myself… ๐

Hi – GREAT article about creating front pages and home pages…. ๐
One minor point – instead of “back end”, I would have used the term “dashboard” – for the less techie, they might not know the term “back end”, that they would know the term “dashboard” more….

Hi Nile,

by default, i think wordpress has set it to that dynamic front page where the homepage changes from time to time, especially when you create new blog posts. I didn’t really know you could make the front page static until I get to learn more about wordpress. I was amazed when I saw the effect and even more amazed at how easy it was to make it static. WordPress is definitely the site that I am most comfortable with. Very user friendly.

I desperately tried to set up wordpress but I can’t! I do not understand why, but basically I cannot upload it to the domain I bought. And it’s never possible to find a guide about THAT. Hope you’ll fix this. Thank you

There are several guides on how to install WordPress no matter if you have to install it manually or have the ability to install it with a automatic program.

Nice tutorial Nile. I’ve never tried it myself, but am tempted to for a new project of mine. Let’s hope the customization is as easy as the setup.

I am learning some great tips from you Nile! I kind of knew most of this, but the reading settings was the part I was not clear on. You are providing a fantastic service for all of us in TSA and online. Keep up the great work.

My god! thank you again! I HATED having a post archive as my front page – it made my front page take 10 seconds to load!
To be honest I had no idea I could even make my main page static until I ran across this in my RSS feed.
Thanks!

Rather than just make the front page static, I use W3 Total Cache plugin to cache my entire site. Because of my pay-as-you-go hosting, serving up static files greatly reduces the fees I accrue on my hosting plan. Not only does it reduce fees for me, it is served up quicker by the server because it doesn’t have to do much server-side processing.
