You hear it all the time.
“You have to be passionate about blogging.”
“You need to make sure your content is fresh and unique.”
Of course, there are many other tips out there that are re-hashed aplenty.
You might read a lot of repeat material. It can be frustrating, especially if you are really trying to learn something. And no, I am not talking about duplicate content. Everyday there are articles written by various bloggers, and the great thing is that each is written a bit differently and to the blogger’s own experience.
However, how can you make sure that your content is not the same as the next blog?
Easy – Do your research!
If you are writing about a topic that you think has been published over and over, do a search. Read those articles and think about what they are saying and if everything is being covered that should be covered. Sometimes the topic is about an ongoing issue or perhaps, like in web design, there are new techniques. In blogging and social media marketing, there are always new tools and gadgets to help give bloggers and marketers a leg up.
The same advice can be used for guest writers on your own blog. If they are not covering everything, amend the post with the necessary information. While the original author might have taken the time to write a great post, it is your job as the blog owner to make it the best it can be.
A lot of new bloggers are excited about blogging and often get fuel for blog topics from their own peers. Unfortunately, if their peers have not been long in the business, their topics tend to become repeated material. Not good if you are a blogger still in the early stages of building your readership.
In the case you are writing in reference to another blogger’s post, you will probably want to link to the original article, do a summarization of the post, and what your readers can learn from it. This is great for your authority and gives a little link juice to the original author.
Natural knowledge only goes so far. Be resourceful and research. It will definitely help your content is different from the next blog.
What resources do you like to use for your research? Do you like to link back to original articles?

Hi Nile! You're so right about this. I get frustrated too when I go to a blog post thinking that it will add some new information but it's just a repeat of the same old stuff. I find a lot of that going on now with Google + and it seems like everyone found a post they saw on Tech Crunch or Mashable and regurgitated the same points.
I try to add my own unique spin or a different point of view to a topic. And if I can't think of one, I just move on to something else to write about. There's plenty of new post ideas around these days. ๐
Thanks Nile!

You can sometimes walk a fine line when it comes to blog subjects. On the one hand, you don't want to rehash some of the same old subjects that are out there. On the other hand, you don't necessarily want to discuss something so esoteric, only a few people get what you're talking about…

I really check out my entries first before writing on a topic to see if I have the same topic. I sometimes get inspired by photos I see as I browse through other websites, but I really check if the topic I will be writing on has the same gist with my other entries. ๐

I usually make adequate research before to make new blog post. Yes, it need more time to do it. But i think it can make it unique. I write it again with my own writing style and i add with my opinion too.
Because my blog is for beginner, so i write it with simple words. It has no technical words or sentence on it.

It's pretty difficult to write anything that's "new" these days, especially since information is so readily available. I definitely agree with the writer being the key to any reader, regardless of their subject. In niche blogs, this is absolutely true because there's only so many niche subjects that can be posted.

As someone who is new to blogging I read many blogs each day trying to build upon my knowledge. Some of the blogs that I come in contact with do seem to repeat information. Those are the ones that I try to stay away from. The blogs that I return to are those that build upon what has already been said.

Most of the time you wont notice similarities of certain blogs once they are posted. Maybe there will be few differences, but very much the same.
Creating your topic simplier but more detailed and directed to the point, makes your work unique. But still i suggest to search over the web before creating such an article. Youre never sure if the article that your creating might have been posted by somebody else.

When so many people are putting up blogs and then duplicate "dummy" blogs filled with "spun" material (software that creates essentially duplicate articles with words auto-replaced using a thesaurus), it becomes more and more difficult to write original content when it comes to certain topics (blogging, SEO, tech).

With so much content on the net, its really important to make your content stand out from the rest. It doesnt mean you have to be totally different and write about something completely different than everyone else. But if you can be unique and original rather than just following the trend it can make a really big difference.

@ Nile: I agree with you, especially the reserch part. For us blogger, proper research (not necessarily keyword research) plays a crucial role.
I'm also considering guest posting. Do you have any experience with it? Any advice?

Hello Nile
Since the content of your blog is actually meant for your visitors who come to look for information. Thinking from the perspective of visitors and then write the content and not just for search engine. Your explanation how to write this with unique content through research does make the task not only easy but fun to do. I really like this suggestion, “Be resourceful and research. It will definitely help your content is different from the next blog.”

Definitely write content that is directed more toward your visitors. You can also learn from others in your niche on what people are responding to better and prepare content that will beat out your competition. Being open mind enough to learn and gather resources to use is a sure win in the right tool bag toward better content writing. ๐

All of us strive to be unique in every other way. I think that’s one way of beating the competition. I agree that before writing something, research should be done and should be catchy. I also agree that it should tackle stand points that are unsual as the others. Great observation there Nile!
