How to Improve the Quality of Your Blog Posts

By Nile Flores 98 Comments

Quality content is probably something you keep hearing or reading from people when it comes to content writing. Not everyone can be an English major, and we are all not perfect. However, to be competitive in your blog niche, you have to provide quality information.

You can do this through several factors:

  • Research
  • Content Quality Control

Yes, it really is simple as those two areas, but the question is – why?

Researching to Improving the Quality of Your Blog Posts

Well, research is a big area in content writing. In order to write about something, you must have some knowledge on it. The issue is:

  • How much knowledge do you have on the topic?
  • How much time are you willing to invest in researching what you do not know?

If you go out with guns blazing and just write an article without thorough investigation, you are risking your reputation, and the quality of your blog’s content. Your readers deserve the best, right?

So, once you have established that you are determined to provide quality blog posts, you will want to put aside time to research. It might take reading books, interviewing people, and reading other sites in your niche.

Content Quality Control to Improve Your Blog Posts

Content Quality Control involves making sure your article is thorough, well worded, spelled correctly, and unique.

If you go through your blog post and feel that you are missing something, go back to the first stage to improving your article by researching. If it takes reading twenty different blogs, or going to a library to read an encyclopedia… do it!

Blogging is a beautiful thing as it is more relaxed than journalism and allows the blogger’s voice to come out. While you do want to provide a great reading experience, you need to be conscientious of spelling and grammar. Of course, the grammar does not have to be perfect, but it MUST be understood. In the case you are in a competitive blog niche, you would want to try hard to not make too many mistakes as your site may be on a world level and must be understood by people who do not speak or read your language as a first language.

Proof your posts before publishing. As many times as you may have read that, you need to drill it deep within and make it a habit.

Have you implemented research and content quality control into your blogging habits? What resources make it easier to research or help with content quality control for your blog?

I think the most important characteristic of an awesome blog post is to actually deliver useful and easy to read information to the reader. This way you will add value to your blog and people will always come back to find out more.

Thanks for sharing this information, really enjoyed reading your post.

    HI,

It’s my first time on your website and I must say that you are writing good things. I liked the one with the video for the wordpress theme but I like this even more.
I must agree with you that the first rule is to have quality content on your blog. Marketers know that retaining a client it’s far cheaper than getting a new one. It’s too bad that a lot of people are actually not doing this and they are doing all stuff of black hat seo to drive “Trafic” on their blog…

Hi Nile, excellent topic to cover. Most people talk about quality content without ever telling new bloggers (or even some old ones for that matter) how to develop it.

It takes time to build up expertise and knowledge in a given topic but many times people want to take short cuts. The world around us is constantly changing so we always need to keep on top of the latest news and trends also.

    Thanks for the post Nile!

Oh yes Nile, research is key. That is where I spend most of my time on creating posts. Research and from by doing if I am to teach something in a post. It’s hard to write about something if you don’t really know about it and then the readers may not return, right? Nice topic!

    Nile,

It’s funny that you mention spelling and grammar as a way to improve the quality of your blog. I am dumbfounded when I read some blogs with blatant misspellings and 3 grade grammatical errors. It immediately draws away from the purpose and intent of the post.

With that said, you want your readers to come to rely on what you post as being content they can count on to be accurate. Having command of a subject is essential for that to happen and research from dependable sources is the way to go.

Interestingly, your sources would have to practice what you are trying to accomplish with your content control also. In order for you to be a reliable source you must research from reliable sources.

    Thanks for an interesting topic.

    Hi Nile
I think one of the biggest PITA on the web is people telling people to write how they talk, and then grousing about poor grammer online.

People don’t speak in a grammatically correct manner.

I’d rather read a post filled with passion than something that’s so sterile and pristine perfect that all the personality has been sucked from it. Research away, but do your best and don’t edit out who you are.

    Hey Nile,

True making sure what you write about is accurate is a great tip. For instance, if I promoted on my blog that spun content and profile backlinks are the best way to build backlinks, people would obviously think this guy is an idiot. I always try to review the facts. Usually, my grammar is pretty good, but I am not a professional writer :). What helps me is a having Textedit read my articles out loud sometimes your eyes can get tired but your ears can catch stuff your eyes don’t :).

    Hi Nile,
writing about something that you are passionate about and something that you know a lot about is key. second is being entertaining and relating to your audience. I certainly don’t care if there are a few grammatical errors but sometimes it is crazy how poor the grammar is and that is a turn-off.

However, I agree about researching your topic but in this day of internet business, there is only so much time to write so it is best to stick to stuff that you know something about – it will flow better.

    Hi Nile,

I recently posted an article which contained an excerpt from a speech given by Mark Hoverson. It is a transcription of his speech and it is not grammatically correct. However it is a vibrant, interesting, and compelling post.

Readers deserve to be treated with quality content, so I like to have a mix of both. Researched content and casual sharing. The posts I get the greatest response are the ones that are written as if I were speaking. Sometimes it is a challenge to keep it grammatically correct, because as Sarah Arrow pointed out, “People don’t speak in a grammatically correct manner.”

Your suggestion to have your posts proofed is a great idea.

I research my topics completely before posting and I always double check for spelling and grammar errors before I post it. Our audience deserves the best we have to offer and if we can’t deliver on this we should not be blogging.

    Thanks for the tips Nile.

Many times when I write an article I read it several times before posting. The problem I have is that sometimes the brain is writing faster than the fingers and I think about a main point that I want to write and end up skipping it all together.

I usually don’t find those errors until well after the post is published and it gets a little irritating. But patience is a virtue that I am currently working on, and maybe one day I will get it right!! In the mean time, thank god for spell check and the built in grammar checker in Word.

This is a good article to help us slow down a bit maybe and pay attention to what we are writing. Then take the time to go back and change what we’ve done so it is more correct.

Content and purpose of writing are so important. The “write epic shit” idea from Corbett Barr was one of the best ideas I had ever read on making writing valuable for the reader. Its important to not only attract the reader to our sites but to keep their attention once they are there.

Good content, and decent spelling and grammar can help with that a lot.

    Hi NIle,

Great post. I have read many blogs with blatant grammatical and spelling errors. Sometimes, of course, the mistakes are accidental – typos and misspellings from writing quickly and failing to check the writing before hitting publish.

I have also noticed some blogs which really offer very little insight, information or researched content – just a big pitch for the reader to purchase their latest product. That type of blog makes me turn away quickly and not return.

I love getting small shots of wonderful content, specific research on one area (technology, finances, even real estate) that I may be able to apply immediately or store in my brain for future reference.

    Warmly,

One thing I have noted is that Google’s Analytics provides fantastic feedback on Blogs and how users see your site. When I started modifying my posts and adding real, knowledgeable content to them some 3 months ago I started to see a rise in traffic within a month. I’m not talking number of users here but instead number of page-views per user which in itself is a very very important factor. Whereas before I would get an average of 1.3 page-view per user, I’m now getting 3 per user and people are staying on the site for longer, dropping my bounce rate. Some web devs call this “Authority”, I think it’s just common sense.

Save the image as a PNG. PNG is at least 72 DPI. While it is not 300 DPI (which is optimal for printing), PNG does not pixelate on the web like GIF and JPEG do.

The Most important thing what i think is the KISS principle i.e Keep it Simple, Stupid. Which means that along with the originality of the article it should be written with keeping the audience in mind and intentions proper. And the image, as it is said it speaks thousands words, should be in tune with the msg.

Yes, reading and research are paramount in just about every case to having a solid post. I’m working on a LinkedIn post right now, which I’ve used consistently for four years, but still have to fact check. Finding the number of registered and active users from their recent earnings report. These are time consuming activities, and just another reason while people drop out of blogging.

    Hi Nile,

Researching before starting out my writing is an awesome practice that makes my articles stand out the best among every other articles of the same topic. Today before writing my article, I didn’t only researched through blogs, I also studied how I can beat them all on SERP and behold using a broad match on my keyword to search where i am on google SERP (after publishing the article), I was on Google’s second SERP page . Researching before writing is the only way you’ll know more about what you’re writing, Plus it helps expose the weakness of your writing or gets you more ideas of the topic and much more. Researching before writing is something serious and should be put to work.

Thank you for this information, It’s true that Research is a great part of blogging… I think there are times that researching should take more time than the actual writing process.

Thank Nile and welcome for sharing this valuable and impressive blog post. Really this is one of the good source of quality posting tutorial. Actually i never thought about using Content quality control before for blogging purpose. When i interest to read blog, i just visit them and i think it would not only help for creative purpose but also help eliminate publishing. I guess i should start using them to organize everything and expect for more traffic to my blog.
