How Can Pinging Your Site Be Beneficial?

By Nile Flores 20 Comments

To understand how pinging your site be beneficial, you have to understand what “pinging your site” is all about. To ping your site is sending the link or even feed link of your website out through one or many services that help index your site faster. It also tells search engines your site is updated.

Some of these places may be article sites where they give you a back link to your website and post the title, link to the original page or article, and a short description. Some of the sites out there may send your article to those places for you quickly (somewhat like social bookmarking.)

With search engines that you update your site with, your site will be ranked amongst others that have similar descriptions, titles, keywords, and more. For those who optimize their pages already, and even ping their site, it could mean a better listing.

It can be tedious to enter in your links to ping sites. Some of the ping sites out there are free to use. Some are free, but have limitations, and others for mass submission have a fee. It is at your own risk if you want to pay to use any of the services out there, so do a little research to make sure they are reputable.

Side note: Also, there are people on Fiverr (as of July 2011) that will submit for you too. However, from my own experience, many of the places submitted to were 404 errors, so please keep this in mind and only use at your own risk.

Often, I hear bloggers ask why they should spend so much time to ping sites if the back links do not have much quality. My answer- while you may not have the time, you can certainly schedule to ping your site sometimes… perhaps once a week, or twice a month. I might not recommend pinging your site constantly. Some sites do have rules and it could get your banned from using their services.

Now, for users of WordPress and some other CMS, you may have a built in pinging service that you can put the links to the places you want to notify of your updates and submit your updates for you.

Do you ping your site? How often do you? What ping services do you like to use?

    Hi Nile,
What I've been doing lately is using Pingler to ping the site that I have left a comment for. This is a win-win for both of us.

I'm trying to remember who taught me that tip. I think it may have been Ana Hoffman or was it you?

I placed 20 or so ping sites into my WordPress ping list. Then I have sites that are not built with WordPress but I use Microsoft Live Writer to post to which also contains a list of ping sites that it will ping when you post. And to make sure I am getting them all, I ping with the ping-o-matic website those that are not WordPress based.

It is definitely a good idea to ping our blog posts to the indexing sites and aggregators. Oh yes, don't rely on Fiverr, most of the time $5 will not get you good services. 🙂

    Hello Nile,
I use to ping my site regularly by using Ping-O-Matic but then read somewhere (can't remember where) that you are not supposed to ping too often. I am now a user of WordPress and no longer ping my site.

I just discovered "pinging" a few weeks ago. As I try to build my online business, I've found it to be very valuable. I just look at it like I'm outside Google's office throwing rocks saying, "hey, hey, I've updated, come check me out."

Thanks for stetting the importance of this. It does take some time to do, but It's worth it. There's sites/companies that make it very easy, too.

Oh man I feel so stupid, I've been link building for quite some time now and never even realized this. However, would I be correct in saying that this is advisable more for sites and blogs that get updated often?

@accidentattorneysgroup: That's a great analogy, methinks I'll throw rocks at Google's office more frequently from now on!

    Hey Nile,
I have a wordpress site and it is set to go out to ping-o-matic and that is the only link I have in there. Are there some others that are good you would recommend? Also I have been reading about how wordpress will ping your sites every time you have an update or a revision and that could get your site banned.

I tend to update quite a bit while I am writing the post and finding errors after publishing, I will go back and update. Is there a way to check if I have already been banned from a pinging site?

    Thanks for the article.
I've used a service I found on eBay that submits your site for pinging. So far I do not see any results (good or bad) to be honest, even though I've checked the list provided to me it seems that my site has actually been submitted.

I was told about pinging over a year ago. I inserted a giant list into my WordPress and let it do the work.

It really does make a difference. I can see some of my posts come up in searches super fast! It’s awesome.

Definitely. It does help a lot. I am thinking of putting together a large list of ping sites. I know there are articles with a list, but there are far more good ping sites than there use to be.

Its good to ping and notify the search engines that your site has a new post, new content, or your site has been updated. Spiders periodically crawl our site but its faster when we let the search engines know the latest updates.
