Facebook: To Tag or Not To Tag

By Nile Flores 12 Comments

Not bragging, but I have well over 2500 followers in Facebook. I have been noticing a habit in applications that encourage people to tag their friends. Recently, one of my followers tagged me, along with 150 people. This drew a concern when I noticed well over 70 emails in my inbox asking the person to either remove them from being tagged or complained because of the email. I do not have the power to disallow this option. If I have approved other people as members, I do not have the option to allow people to tag me in photos. What does this do?

Well, since people can make applications on their own, if these ‘friendly’ taggings could be utilized by spammers. Since a person still can only have 5000 followers max on Facebook, that could mean a lot of unwanted email filled with complaints.

What can be done?

Look at the application and if it requires tagging friends, tag a small amount of people. Tagging hundreds of people may cause a lot of problems, especially if the application is not even of interest to some of your followers. In fact, you could possibly be reported for spamming. A lot of the game applications on Facebook only allow 20 to 30 invitations at a time, so try to aim for a smaller group than that.

If a person is persistent with tagging you, consider removing them from your friends. It might be fun for them, but really it is almost like those emails that people forget to put their long email list in the BCC line. If it gets out of line, either contact the application creator or report the application to Facebook and ask if they can limit the tagging for the application.

Have you had this happen to you on Facebook? What do you suggest?

    Hey Nile,

Amazing experience you have shared regarding topic and you know this things become common in Facebook. You can tag your own friends or other Pages in the photos, but not your fans. This is to prevent people from violating privacy.

When a photo is tagged, the people tagged get notifications and if they have tag review turned on, will be able to approve the tag before it appears on their timeline. Eventually, thanks for sharing your wonderful experience with us.

    With best wishes,

    Hey Amar!
I’m completely Agree with your point of view about tagging.
If you’re an admin of a group, you may add tags for your organization to help humans apprehend what it is about. adding tags additionally allows humans look for groups by using subjects that they’re interested by.

    Thanks Nile!

    Hie Nile,

When Facebook was came at the beginning… “tagging” feature was cool..

Problem is anybody can tag you…without any relation with the Image or Video.

If you know who are tagging you then it is “Ohk”… But anonymous person tagging you then you should definitely remove them.

Well, Tagging is the best way to increase likes on my fb post 😉

But this is very irritating if post is unusual/uninterested. So i have disabled auto tag photos to me. When someone tag me, I get notification to review the post and then decide to keep or remove from timeline.

    Thanks.

I don’t really tag friends on my facebook page especially if it’s from my blog. I do however, tag companies or people that is part of the topic like, let’s say, a public figure. This was awesome though, incredible insight on how to use facebook better.

    Hi Nile,

Well, I always get irritated with the tags, even with tag review turned on, those notifications, yuk. I think people are crazy, they tag us in worthless stuff, it is just wasting time.

By the way, Thanks for picking up the topic.
