Depositphotos.com is a royalty free stock image resource site I decided to sign up and try out.
Now, many people I know usually try different stock sites or even do an image search on Google… however, if you choose to use images that might have certain licensing preventing you from altering, using for commercial use, using on a blog without altering, or even re-distributing.
Depositphotos clearly has a policy that their images can be used within the bounds of the individual image’s license and that the image can be used as many times by the person who bought the image. This is great as some places do only allow one time use and frankly, for niche blogs, some images tend to be used more than once.
As a graphic and web designer, I do use stock images from time to time, and even vector images. For me, it is extremely important to choose pictures and graphics that will fit a site’s brand, and that those images are of the best quality they can be.
I found that the selection of graphics were quite extensive, which is great because I design and develop for many different types of websites.
I actually picked a few to share with you… of course, edited from the original version. I am a big fan of vector imaging, so it is no surprise I picked a couple vectors. 🙂
The first image actually came in a really nice set of icons that I am pretty sure I am going to use on a web hosting site. Even after having editing these, I did other edits and was able to change colors and even take out the background so I can use a different background in my graphic editor program. The vectors were extremely easy to work with even when the layers were merged. That is a plus for me because I did not have to do any cleanup work on the images.
You can never have too many resources for graphics… at least I think that way. Because of the growing number of sites built, many websites have similar graphics. For new members, Depositphotos.com gives a 7 day free trial where you can download 5 free images a day. This is a good deal as many of the images are of high quality. They also have a whole area dedicated to free photos. I recommend giving it a try at least. And even without the free trial, the pricing is fairly reasonable.
By the way, according to Depositphoto’s blog, in August 2012, they reached over 9 million images! So, that means you can find an image for just about anything.
Have you tried Depositphotos.com?

Hi again Nile,
Thanks for mentioning the website. Will have a look at the type, amount and quality of the images (especially vector images) they have available.

Hey Nile!
I’ll be looking into this one – I’ve been trying to keep my blog images as “original” as possible, lest I run afoul of the copyright police, who have been very active lately. My advice to those who can’t afford to purchase images: use your camera, your cellphone, mspaint, whatever, and create your own images!

Yes, Depositphotos is a good source of getting some high quality images for one’s blog. There are many other sites like these that charge only a minimal fee for downloading images. The cost of images vary depending on the specific size you want to download. Istockphoto.com is also a good option.
Thanks.

Very nice share. It looks like they have a very nice stock of photos. I think I will have to share this post to a few people. I have some friends who love photography.

I’m not the biggest fan of microstock agencies because I sell photos. But they sure do offer affordable vectors (which I do like). So for me, someone who uses images on my blog and someone who also sells images, I’m a bit torn on using microstock at all or try a new site. Pictures I’ve sold on Dreamstime for fifty cents have sold on a macro agency website for $75.00 . It may take longer to sell sometimes, but that’s way worth the wait.
Michael Dwenn says
Thank you for your post, getting high quality photos at a reasonable cost was one of my main issues with my baby blog. Right now my own photos, but the quality is just not what I would like to see.

Hey Nile,
Thanks so much for passing this information on. Lately finding images has been quite the struggle. So much so, that I started creating my own. Some look like a five year old made them lol.
I’m going over to check it out right now. It couldn’t have come at a better time for me because I’m setting up a webinar and need some photos for my slides.
Thanks so much,
Donna

I discovered Dipositphotos.com a couple of months ago. I don’t find the quality of images quite as good as say iStock, but for blog posts and that kind of thing they are a great option and certainly easy to use.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think shutterstock is the best option to be true.

Hi Nile,
I went into their site, and browsed. They have a nice collection of images, although not that cheap. What bothered me most is that I got into their “free image” (The link you provided) and found out that they ask for subscription plans. So if you ask for money don’t call it “Free”. Other then that, I don’t see any advantage over fotolia or other image banks.

Hello, thank you for sharing this post. I have been trying to look for decent photographs for a while now, so I am glad I came across this post. I have tried making my own photos, to see if I could maybe create something unique and original, however my creative skills are not the greatest. I will check this website out for the type and quality of photos and hopefully I will find something I like.

Even if you’re not a graphic designer or anything like that, finding stock images that are good quality and cheap is near-impossible I’ve found. I run two blogs on my two favourite hobbies – just for fun, really – and filling the first site with relevant images in each post started to cost me a small fortune!
If I ever start up another site I’ll be looking at Deposit Photos very closely. In fact, I’ll look at it for future blog posts on my existing site. This was a brilliant share so thank you for taking the time to spread to love!

Terrific resource. I tend to take images off of Google and probably have stepped on some toes in the past. This site would cover those transgressions.
Many thanks for the update.

Be very careful on using free images. Some of the companies out there buy the right of free images and start to sure users who obtained those while they were free. Like gettyimages send out letters asking $1000 per images not to take you to a court.
Julieanne van Zyl says
Hello Niles, I haven’t heard of that site before. I agree that it’s important to be able to change the images, so the site’s images look different and follow the brand.
