Ask Nile: When Can You Be Considered a Full Time Blogger?

By Nile Flores 27 Comments

ask-nile-thumbnailIn this part of the Ask Nile Series, I answer “When Can You Be Considered a Full Time Blogger?”

This is certainly not an easy question. Becoming a full time blogger doesn’t happen over night. It takes quite a bit of time. And becoming a full time blogger can depend on how much money you need to make in order to do more than just survive on.

If you’re having aspirations of becoming a full time blogger, here’s some of the following you need to think about:

  • House payment or apartment rental fee
  • Insurance (car, home or apartment, health)
  • Food cost
  • Cost of daily necessities (gas for car, toiletries)
  • Electric, water, and trash fees
  • Taxes

If you’ve got children, factor that into what you need to make to become a full time blogger. This number should cover a regular job that you’ve been working. Your number may be different depending on your country, and your own ambitions. If you’re aiming for more, then you’re going to have to work that much harder to make it happen.

Once you know what you need to make, don’t quit your daytime job until you can safely save up and comfortably live off of what you make with blogging.

In the time you work towards becoming a full time blogger, you will probably be doing a lot of work. You will be trying to make money through reviews, brand ambassadorships, advertisements, affiliate marketing, paid to blog opportunities, and much more.

You will be spending a lot of time blogging and engaging with your readers and followers.

This post isn’t to deter you from becoming a full time blogger, but to instill the reality that it will be a lot of time and work to get there.

If you can make the money to live comfortably, then that’s when you can start to consider yourself as a full time blogger.

    Hi Nile,

Yeah, you are right; you’ve got to ensure that the money you are making on your blog can cater for you and your family before you can be considered a full-time blogger.

If you are just starting out, rest assured it would take some time of quality hard work to get to that point; but it well doable, just don’t give up.

Personally, I consider a full-time blogger as one earning an average of $4000/month.

Thanks Nile for bringing up this post.

I’m a first-time visitor to your blog by the way

I am not a full-time blogger. I don’t ever plan to be one. I really admire people who can turn their blog into the ends itself, but for me, it’s just a means to an end.

I honestly have never aspired to be a full time blogger but I do see it as an option for some people. Like anything else it requires dedication and patience and of course a ton of marketing savvy. I think a lot of people have dreams of this sort but don’t truly understand the need to possess a strong business sense to be successful in such a venture.

It’s a great goal for some, but most peter out before they really get started. Great things to think about that you bring up, Nile!

Thanks for helping us understand this concept. Many times the blogger quits before they get to that stage as they feel the results are slow for them to make money.

As you say you’d have to be very certain that you could make enough money to cover all your fixed expenses and I don’t see how you could be sure without already earning a fair amount from blogging. I imagine the majority that turn full time are were working hard at blogging in all of their free time. They’ve already sussed out a formula for blogging that they know works, one that will be sustainable.

    Hello,
Choosing Full time blogging requires dedication, patience, and hard work. There are tons of bloggers out there which by their dedicated efforts are now earning 5000$ + per month

i am not a full time blogger and and its very much time consuming to keep ,my visitors updated. This makes me wonder how much more time full time bloggers give to their blog to achieve success. Good luck to those who wish to venture into it.

Good point, Nile. I remember my network marketing mentor telling us that we shouldn’t quit our day job till we were making 3x as much with our home business, as our day job. That way we’re likely to be debt-free, as well as have the financial means. That way we work from a position of strength and positivity, rather than from a desperation to succeed.

Nile, this tells allot of us how to make sure not to expect much in the beginning. Yes, time it takes and each person will not be the same waiting period. Most will not be able to handle it. Juggling home, Job and meeting new people to bond real relationships.

It is not like put something out there and know you have thousands of people feeling confident that your are an ethical person. Now, the can start to respond to various things you share which will enhance their lives. On their time!

It’s a lot harder than a lot of people think it is. Most people tend to think it is a get rich quick scheme but it takes years and years of making nothing to get anything out of it.

Yes. Being a full-time blogger might look easy, but the journey to become a full-time blogger and staying on top as a full-time blogger takes a lot of work.

Good idea to bring your knowledge of how much work there is in blogging, to other people’s attention Nile. A lot of people just starting out don’t realize there’s more to it than writing Blog posts – the marketing of a Blog takes a lot of time also. It’s not just a matter of “Build it and they will come”. A new Blog is going to be 1 tiny dot within the thousands of other blogs on the internet.
