Hmm… is it possible to blog without SEO? That’s a really good question. Yes, you can. Should you? Probably not, especially if you are wanting to rank well in search results on search engines, like Google. If you aren’t trying to rank well, or worried about being seen, then go ahead and blog whatever you like.
Wait! You might be reading this article and wanting to know what it means to blog without SEO, especially if you’re fairly new to SEO. SEO, or search engine optimization, especially in regards to blogging, means that you are creating content around topics, or keywords, that you want the search engines to possibly pick up and list. In return, there are hundreds or maybe thousands of people that may be searching for that topic, or keyword.
Is it Possible to Blog without SEO?
As a blogger, especially if you’re ambitious and want to reach a wider audience, you have to write about things that your readers or your niche are interested in. Not every blogger starts with knowing what they should write about. It comes with time, and research. Being passionate about what you blog about is nice, but it can only take you so far. Researching keeps you on top of what people want to read, and open to tackling topics you would’ve never thought about blogging about. It also fuels your blog with more content.
Aside from that, if you’re using a content management system, like WordPress, a SEO plugin helps you focus on writing blog posts. Some, like Yoast SEO, guide you to writing better, while focusing on a specific keyword. A SEO plugin also has tools to help structure your website, like titles and metas, and give Google a suggestion for using your blog posts’ descriptions. Some of them, you can set up to automatically add things like Open Graph, so your social handles appear in your search result’s Knowledge card, and help make your articles display well when shared on social networks.
So, the choice is up to you as a blogger. Do you want to grow your audience? Are you running out of topics to write about? Then yes, you’re going to have to use SEO techniques.

There are some great tips in here – loved this post and will be discussing some of the recommended actions with my team the next time we promote some new content, as it’s easy to overlook some of these actions, but they do work!

You are right, there are many bloggers from different niches who may not be aware of SEO at all or have minimum knowledge on this, but still they are blogging. But in reality if someone wants to build his brand and make his blog reputed and profitable, then most probably that’s not possible without SEO. Personally I have seen bloggers on travel, interior designing, finance domains who blog without any SEO. But after they got the training from me, they got the actual view of how blogging can be a profession or business.

I think it is best to optimize for more than one platform. I need to be ready for Google to hit my site or for Pinterest to fail. It is never good to have all your eggs in one basket. So I do both SEO and optimizing for Pinterest.

Hello Nile.
Virtually every blogger that starts out (usually on blogger or wordpress.com) just begin writing with no clue whatsoever of seo.
Is it important? Yes. Bit then again, if you just want to keep a personal blog that isn’t commercially inclined, then it isn’t important really.
Anything otherwise and it is.
Cheers.

Hey,
In simple words yes, But at least do share your blog on social media to get some traffic.
And as far as SEO is Concerned, There is no need to do it. It gets done automatically if the content is good, and is engaging. It will get your blog on 1st page of google for the relevant keywords and you don’t have to do anything.
Just write useful and great content that your visitors would like and the benefit is that google love such content.
Christopher Charles says
I think that’s one of the biggest misconceptions about starting a blog – write it and they will come. Not true. Google is a popularity contest (not the best answer to your question as they claim) and you’ve got to get out there and fight for attention or you’re not writing for anybody but yourself.

Great post! I agree completely. Ranking on search engines is very difficult without proper SEO tools such as Yoast. The only way to drive traffic without SEO would be word-of-mouth. Thanks for the read!

It is not possible to reach a wider audience without SEO and other forms of marketing. I once had a poetry blog and just to test it out I didn’t do any SEO and didn’t share the posts on social media. To be honest, I did rank for a few keywords but these were low competition keywords that not many people searched.
Once I ended up on the first page of Google for a keyword that had quite a few hundred searches a day. But that too didn’t last long. And after about three months I started making backlinks and started sharing the links on FB, Twitter and other social networking sites.
And with this little SEO, I started to get a few hundred visits a day.

Great tips. I agree. When I was started blogging I used to write 300words content.
I think nowadays SEO becomes harder and If you know how to write great content and know the content marketing strategy then you don’t need SEO.
Thanks

Yea! this is good information or also true, but sometimes without SEO, it can’t be possible to rank. Many people do blogging with different niche but they are not successful every time. Maybe by luck one or two blogs get famous, but it did not happen every time. So, according to if you really want to rank on Google SEO is the must.

Hello Nile,
Well Said, blogging is possible without SEO as many bloggers use various platforms like WordPress, Tumblr, doodlekit, Drupal, etc. for blogging. If the blogger is sharing his thoughts or opinions on his personal blog, then there is no need to go with SEO.
Very informative post. This will help all marketers who plan for blogging.

Hii Nile,
There are some usefull tips and information for blogging begginers about seo .
Informative post.
Levin Cooper says
All around Stated, blogging is conceivable without Web optimization the same number of bloggers utilize different stages like WordPress, Tumblr, doodlekit, Drupal, and so on for blogging. In the event that the blogger is imparting his musings or insights on his own blog, at that point there is no compelling reason to go with Web optimization.

No it is not possible i think so. SEO is the main body of a blog.
Nile Flores says
SEO is not just the main body of the blog. In fact, it makes little sense to state it that way. There are people out there that are killing it without having done keyword research, and just know their niche that well, or they’ve added a lot of value that people have connected with.
Chris Pineson says
I am totally on your side, especially this one “Do you want to grow your audience? Are you running out of topics to write about? Then yes, you’re going to have to use SEO techniques.” If you hope other users to hear your voice or your opinions, well, SEO is inevitable, and if you just want to solve a problem or just want to express your view and do not want to be responsible for the consequence, well, that SEO means nothing to you.
David Vardy says
Greetings Nile,
Good Piece of content, SEO content writing is important to increase one’s site’s organic visibility and SERP Ranking.
However, I strongly believe that the content should be user friendly. It should resolve the user query.

Hi David!
I agree with you on most things, but in some personal sites, it’s not necessary to think too much on SEO. How do I know, I started off as a blogger 20 years ago, and some people just are using their web space to share random thoughts…and surprisingly, not too concerned about monetizing. So, there are cases where SEO doesn’t apply.
Interestingly enough a lot of us oldies in the blogging world never really thought about SEO until later. Now, with changing my focus to my biz blog and monetizing, I’ve had to learn a lot about SEO that I get to speak about it at conferences across the US. 🙂
Owenayuk says
If you ask me, no seo, no blogging. Blogging without seo is like living without life. Every blogger needs search engine optimization.
Nile Flores says
This is way too extreme in thinking and tells me you’ve not been blogging for a long enough time, to have experienced visiting enough sites in different niche that may not even use SEO at all.
