I like Facebook. I really do, but some of these changes they have made, suck. I actually feel kind of squeezed in Facebook with the chat and the constanting updating stream.
No offense, but I do not want to know everyone’s ongoings, especially where it is distracting to the eye while I am trying to use Facebook. Not only does the livestream keep rolling on, but that little blue popup note on the bottom right hand corner of Facebook also functions. WHY!?!? This is redundant and for anyone on a poor Internet Service Provider, it makes for a longer load.
The great thing about Facebook before this change was how simple and uncluttered the site was. This addition is making for one busy page and frankly, I’d hate to see Facebook put more on the page. It is literally a design disaster!
Will I stop using Facebook? No. Will I complain to Facebook? Yes. Will Facebook listen to my complaint along with the thousands of others who have complained about this change? Probably not. Kimberly Castleberry put a great collection of comics in a post about the reactions to Facebook and their changes.
Where is the big dislike button for this?
What are your thoughts?

We have the same opinion. It's distracting but what else can we do? Even if we scream our heart out, FB won't change its behavior of "add/delete of features" whenever they like without prior notice to the users.
Allen says
It’s very annoying to have live stream on the right sidebar of Facebook. Also Facebook has created automatic news feeds on the left side like Families, Close Friends like that. How the heck Facebook knew who my close friends and family are? And here goes the Facebook Timeline. I am not going to try this one. I’ll wait until Google+ kill Facebook then I’m switching.
Kevin kentt says
I really recommend using Google+ as an alternative option for Facebook.
Sandip says
It is feeling tight and very busy. It’s putting me off going on the site as I cant be bothered to learn about the layout. But I guess, as with the newsfeed, that I’ll get used to it and hopefully learn to love it – that’s if I’m not tempted to switch over to G+ beforehand!
abejith says
I hated the chat sidebar totally.
It made me move to gtalk.
Brian Maher says
As long as Facebook is having the party it is unlikely that Google+ or anyone else will steal their thunder – meaning youy will put up with these changes and more : )
Annie says
I don’t understand why they don’t just allow options anymore, so you can choose whether you want top stories or recent stories. Also, there should be a way to hide the ticker.
Allen Walker says
I really hate the new changes that are being made in Facebook day by day. Hated the new chatbar and hate the new news feed thing, its annoying. If FB keep’s it up it will lose to Google+ even sooner than expected.
Tanya says
I agree with you completely! Why do i need to be updated every time “mike” commented on somebody elses photo!! (rant over) Great post thanks! 🙂
Nicole says
Yeah! I did not also like that changes in Facebook. You’re right that it just makes it look like more cluttered and complex in a way to navigate. And now they were also releasing this TimeLine that would be another unnecessary change. I hope they realize that many users rely to them because of their simplicity.
Ralph says
Like you, I’m irritated by all of the facebook changes, but I won’t stop using it either. I ‘dislike’ how they keep moving around basic functions and I feel like I need to keep relearning basic things like posting a link.
Glad to know I’m not the only one frustrated! Keep up the great work!

I agree somewhat, but I think it’s worse for people that have more friends and thus much more activity going on. I don’t have that many “friends”, so for me it’s still manageable. However I’m afraid that FB is sorta becoming like MySpace (yuch!). Do you really think that Google +1 is going to be a better solution? Perhaps until it gets taken over by kids…like FB!
Genie says
I share your sentiments here. The thing about Facebook is the supposed to be before updates. Unlike today, FB designs are quite messy. TONS of nonsense in the pages. Many of my friends are quite bugged by the said changes they made. We want the old FaceBook back!

I agree with you!! I loved all changes facebook has done!! except the tracker, it’s so annoying!! and i don’t see that there is a point to know what my friends are doing on facebook.
thanks for the post.

I have been thinking lately that these changes came out after for a while Google+ was released. And no matter what we say or how we complain FB doesn’t hear us (perhaps) if it’s was deployed for an intimate purpose. There’s a deal behind the red curtain. I think that the reason for these changes is for FB users to get totally annoyed and have the urge of trying Google+ for a new taste. But not totally out from FB because her friends are not yet found or less in Google+. The gist is not leaving FB yet also buying Google+. When Google+ pop is growing fast then one will come back and ask “where are the annoying changes gone?” Business well done.
Jamie says
I couldn’t agree more. The new layout is distracting. I find that I hardly even get on there anymore except to post on my business page (partly because I don’t want to take the time to learn how to reformat it the way I like it).
David says
The changes won’t stop the steady stream of people heading to Google+.
Chris says
I really hate FB and I seriously think about changing to google+, although it has not that much users.
What is FB even thinking when they do stuff like that? I can`t figure it out…
Cheers and best wishes, Chris
Steven says
Is this not a sitewide change on Facebook? I have yet to see the livestream ticker on my facebook page so I can’t really comment on it. I do like how they are trying to match Google+’s circles feature but it’s not quite there yet in my opinion.
Carson says
Hate the new FB changes. And I do agree it totally clutters up your site. I wish I had the option to stop the ticker on the top right. But like you said I too will continue using it and I bet more changes are to come.

I ended up slowly hating facebook, and the problem is that as long as it is still the no 1 social media website, I can’t just pack up and move to Google+ without losing some of my facebook friends. I completely agree, the new layout was a very bad idea…
aikipet says
I hate it when Facebook always makes new changes on its page, Some of my friends status does not appear on the middle but on the side which you have to click first to look at it. Sigh! why do they have to make it more complicated. Upgrading is good but please don’t do it more often, you make us go crazy!
Rakesh Kumar says
I have so many friends but they setup not in list. I am looking to managed them in proper way.
Farris Wilks says
I hate the new facebook update… and I agree it really sucks now. They should just keep it simple or it will be totally like friendster and myspace.
vhien says
you’re right. the simpler the better. I guess, G+ would be ahead if they continue such annoying sudden changes.
Ryan says
I really like that I have more control over what I see now – with the ability to follow close friends more easily, etc. Yet, I totally agree with you on feeling closed in. Plus, that instant news stream really is terribly annoying!
Rochelle says
I can’t quite keep up with all the changes. I personally don’t like the new changes. There’s like a facebook within a facebook. Too complicated. I love seeing peoples status updates-and now its just a mission. #TwitterForTheWin.
Jade says
I agree 100% with this post, the new Facebook is ridiculous, I don’t ever go on it any more, I feel it is now a waste of time. I used to enjoy being on Facebook before, I think I might also head to Google +. Someone need to knock some sense into Facebook’s page designers. Thank you for sharing your post Nile.
Robert Benwell says
I like the old version than the new one. Its more complicated to use. Others might switch to Google+.
Glen says
Maybe you’re using Facebook a little too much by feeling squeezed. Facebook has successfully taken out the “fun” factor in their social media system which will eventually contribute to their dying out….a few years from now.
Jimmy says
Well if Facebook want the users to switch over to Google+ then they should keep on doing what they are doing now.
I fear what they will come up next, but as you I will properly keep using FB as long as more ppl hasn’t move over to Google+
Anonymous says
the new ticker I hate that, dont know why facebook is doing all such nonsense updates.
Leo says
I think if Facebook did those changes they had a good reason. They generally know what they do, so I guess some people might like this new Facebook.
Anonymous says
Well, I completely agree with you. Their innovations really suck. As for me, I started using Google+. It is a very good alternative to facebook.
Mike Geary says
I do agree with you, the “improvement” they call it does not make their users happy instead it made them mad because it became kinds hard to access or to use, including this new chat box.
I hope that they will turn everything back to its old self, don’t they have any idea that we are all complaining?
Anonymous says
Facebook really been making changes too fast, I really don’t like the new chatbox cause you cannot see all your friends that who is online.
And now a new changes have been made that you can see the activities and stalkers can mostly see your activities so privacy can be more vulgar.
Edward H says
I also like the old version since that’s what I’m used to. By the time I get used to this…it will change again. Sort of like Windows.
Neil says
It semks with Facebook that everyone just gets used to how everything is laid out and people like it, and then they change it for no apparent reason. It is getting very frustrating and for me I have found that I am using Twitter more and more as at least it seems consistent in how it works. I think Facebook needs to watch out that it doesn’t shoot itself in the foot, thinking it is too big to fall.
Tobias says
I think the change wasn’t really necessary. Every time facebook changes the layout, I have the impression they just do it so you can‘t find the privacy settings that easily any more 😉
Ana says
Each and every time Facebook makes another “improvement”, it leaves me completely confused. I have no idea what is the purpose of making this change and I hate how it looks like.
Perhaps they only wanted to make themselves “the topic of the day” because of the Google+, but they could have done a much better job!
james says
Well it’s disturbing allright but i rarely chat on facebook but i think facbook should listen their users instead improving app that really annoying users.
Mary Nightingale says
I think FB have just tried too hard. Its hard to see increased profit for them in all these changes, but moreover increased privacy issues that worry users.
Bruker says
FB is trying to give new updated version of facebook interface because dont want their users to join another social networking site. changes is good but at the same time its irritating too, there is not any feature to change my chat to older version.
Eric OConnor says
I completely agree. The constant opening chat window was beyond annoying. Glad it didn’t last long.
matt says
We’ll I do agree with you Nile since I notice the upper right stream looks so redundant. Its like a waste of bandwidth since what you can see on the stream can also be seen on the main news feed. 🙂
